Geotechnical
Interaction with Colleagues
Structural Engineer:
Points discussed regarding the dead and live load of the building.
Architect:
Points discussed regarding the location and layout of the building
which was considered while determining the type of retaining wall
used for underground structures.
Building Services:
Points discussed regarding the floor to floor height in the
underground structures in order to account for the total depth of
excavation required.
Determination of Soil Profile
and Soil Properties
The soil profile and properties were analysed using the
geotechnical reports of boreholes at the Mamormolen
region .
The bore holes that were taken into consideration for
determining the soil properties were:

FTM 101
FTM 102

Retaining Wall Structure
Sheet piles were first considered for the retaining wall
structure.
The attempt failed since the anchoring length needed to
overcome failure interfered with the surrounding quay
structures.
Cantilever RCC walls were then considered for retaining
structures but the eccentricity of the overturning
moment at the toe exceeded the limit.
(i.e. e>b/6)
Solution : Use of bracings along with
the sheet pile wall.
