mechanical devices operating as a unit. The main
parts are:

COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER

Basically, computer as a system is consists of


different components or elements. There are
three major components of a computer system
namely hardware, software, peopleware.
Hardware refers to the physical
components of a computer that you can actually
touch, such as the keyboard, monitor central
processing unit

Software unlike hardware this element of
computer system is untouchable. It is a set of
instruction use to direct the hardware on how to
turn data into useful information for people to
use. These are programs used by the user to
interact with the computer.
Peopleware these are the people who
used the computer system. They are the most
important factor in a computer system because
they manipulate and program the computer

HARDWARE DEVICES
Hardware may be classified into input
devices, output devices, the central processing
unit (CPU) and secondary storage.
INPUT DEVICES
KEYBOARD

Used to enter
information into the
computer and for
giving commands.
MOUSE

An input device
operated by rolling its
ball across a flat
surface. The mouse is
used to control the on-
screen pointer by
pointing and clicking,
double-clicking, or
dragging objects on the
screen.
TOUCHPAD

A pressure-
sensitive and
motion sensitive
device used in place
of a mouse.
BARCODE READER

An input device
that converts a
pattern of printed
bars into a number
that a computer can
read. They are
often used by
businesses to
quickly input price
and product
information.
SCANNER

A device that allows


pictures to be
placed into a
computer.
MICROPHONE

Allowsthe user to
record sounds as
input to their
computer.
OUTPUT DEVICES
MONITOR

A display screen to
provide output to
the user. It is
where you view the
information your
are working on.
PRINTER

An output device
that produces a
hard copy on paper.
It gives information
to the user in
printed form.
SPEAKERS

Usedto generate or
reproduce voice,
music, and other
sounds.

VIDEO CARD

Connects the computer


to the monitor. It is a

send information to the
monitor for display on
screen.
CD ROM DRIVE

The drive that plays


CDs and reads data
that has been
stored on the CD.
HARD DISK

Magnetic storage
device in the
computer.
RAM

Random Access
Memory
RAM is a computers
temporary memory,
which exists as chips
on the motherboard
near the CPU. It
stores data or
programs while they
are being used and
requires power.
SOUND CARD

Connectsthe
speakers and
microphone to the
computer.
MODEM

Theplace where the


computer is
connected to the
phone line.
NETWORK CARD

A circuit board that


connects the
computer to the rest
of the network
usually using
special cables.
STORAGE DEVICE
CD

Compact Disk A
type of optical
storage device.
USB FLASH DRIVE

USB flash drives are


typically small,
lightweight, removable
and rewritable. They
are generally faster,
hold more data, and
are considered more
reliable (due to their
lack of moving parts)
than floppy disks.
MEMORY CARD
A memory card or flash
memory card is a solid-state
electronic flash memorydata
storage device used with
digital cameras, handheld
and laptop computers,
telephones, music players,
video game consoles, and
other electronics. They offer
high re-recordability, power-
free storage and small form
factor. Memory Capacity-
same as a flash drive

ROUTERS
Routers operate at
the network layer
(layer 3) and
therefore, make
forwarding

called IP (Internet
Protocol) or logical
addresses
SOFTWARE

The term software is used to describe computer


programs that perform a task or tasks on a
computer system. Software can be grouped as
follows:

System software - Operating System etc.


Utility programs - Antivirus etc.
Applications Software - Word, SolidWorks
etc.
SOFTWARE

Programs that tell


the computer what
to do. It provides
instructions that
the CPU will need
to carry out.
DOS

DiskOperating System
This software connects the hardware with
the programs you want to run.

MS-DOS:

Microsoft DOS (Disk Operating System) is a


command line user interface. MS-DOS 1.0
was released in 1981 for IBM computers.

A family of operating
systems developed and
produced by Microsoft
Corp. It provides a
software graphical user
interface (GUI) used on
IBM and compatible
computers.

The skilled workers in the


Information Technology field are
considered as the peopleware. The major
compositions of these IT professionals are
the management group, systems and
procedures group, programming group
and the computers operations group.
MANAGEMENT GROUP
Computer Systems Manager - directs and
plans programming computer operations and
data processing.
SYSTEMS AND PROCEDURE GROUP
People with expertise on hardware and
software design they analyze, develop and apply
principles to produce computer applications and
gadgets.

Computer Engineer

Systems Analyst
PROGRAMMING GROUP
Computer Programmer - Responsible for writing,
testing and maintaining detailed instruction or
programs.
COMPUTER OPERATIONS GROUP
Computer Operator The computer operator sets
up the processor and related equipment, loads
and unloads programs, and ensures proper and
correct operations of the computer
Data Encoder/ Data Entry Operator A data
encoder prepares and encodes documents to
transform source documents into machine
readable and acceptable inputs.
Computer Librarian A computer librarian is
responsible for cataloguing, storing and securing
processed storage media like disks and tapes.
