Free Vibration

Free vibration occurs when a system oscillates under the influence of internal forces alone, without any external forces acting on it. During free vibration, the system will vibrate at one or more of its natural frequencies, which depend on the system's mass and stiffness. Forced vibration is different in that it involves external forces acting on the system. Degrees of freedom refer to the number of independent coordinates needed to describe the motion of a system. The document provides an example problem of calculating displacement, quasi-frequency, and quasi-period for a mass-spring system undergoing free vibration.

What is Free Vibration?
Free vibration takes place when a system oscillates under the action
of forces inherent in the system itself due to initial disturbance, and
when the external impressed forces are absent.

The system under free vibration will vibrate at one or more of its
natural frequencies, which are properties of the dynamical system
established by its mass and stiffness distribution.
Free VS. Forced Vibration
Free Vibration-
In Free vibration, the object is not under the influence of any kind of
outside force.

Forced Vibration-
In forced vibration, the object is under the influence of an outside force.
-The vibration that takes place under the excitation of external forces.
This can be understood more clearly by the following example:
What is Degrees of Freedom (DOF) ?
Degrees of Freedom (dof):

The number of independent co-ordinates required to describe the

motion of a system

Sample Problems:
1.A mass of 1 kg stretches a spring 0.1 m. The system
has a damping constant of = 14. At t = 0, the mass is
pulled down 2 m and released with an upward velocity
of 3.5 m/s. Find the displacement function. What are
the systems quasi-frequency and quasi-period?
