Avian Flu Awareness

Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is a contagious disease caused by avian flu viruses that primarily infect birds but can also infect humans. The viruses are typically transmitted from wild birds like ducks to domesticated birds like chickens through bird droppings or secretions, and then humans can become infected through contact with infected live birds, especially in crowded live bird markets. Symptoms of bird flu in humans include sore throat, cough, fever, muscle aches, eye infections, pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress which can cause death. General precautions to reduce risk include maintaining a healthy lifestyle with nutritious food, exercise, rest, and avoiding smoking.

Avian Flu

Awareness
Avian influenza or Bird flu is a contagious disease caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses.
These viruses occur among birds, though several cases of human infection have occurred .
Fifteen subtypes of influenza are known to infect birds. Two influenza subtypes infect humans -
H7N7 and H5N1(the last very dangerous).

How Humans Get Bird Flu:

The wild migratory water fowl, ducks etc. carry viruses that causes bird flu. These host birds
infect domestic birds (chicken, turkey, geese etc.) by their bird droppings, saliva and nasal
secretions.
The virus spreads to domesticated birds thru contaminated water, soil, poultry feed etc.
Fowl markets provide pathways to humans where birds and eggs are sold in crowded and
unsanitary conditions (contact with live infected birds).

Signs and Symptoms of Bird Flu:

Sore throat, cough, fever and muscle aches, eye infections (conjunctivitis ) , pneumonia and
acute respiratory distress which causes death.

General Precautions:

Increase your immunity by living a healthy lifestyle.

Eat nutritious food.
Get regular exercise.
Take multivitamin supplements.
Dont smoke.
Get adequate rest and recreation.
