Avian Flu Awareness
Awareness
Avian influenza or Bird flu is a contagious disease caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses.
These viruses occur among birds, though several cases of human infection have occurred .
Fifteen subtypes of influenza are known to infect birds. Two influenza subtypes infect humans -
H7N7 and H5N1(the last very dangerous).
The wild migratory water fowl, ducks etc. carry viruses that causes bird flu. These host birds
infect domestic birds (chicken, turkey, geese etc.) by their bird droppings, saliva and nasal
secretions.
The virus spreads to domesticated birds thru contaminated water, soil, poultry feed etc.
Fowl markets provide pathways to humans where birds and eggs are sold in crowded and
unsanitary conditions (contact with live infected birds).
Sore throat, cough, fever and muscle aches, eye infections (conjunctivitis ) , pneumonia and
acute respiratory distress which causes death.
