Organization and implementation
of the pipeline cleaning

Organization and implementation of the pipeline cleaning includes the following main
process operations:
evaluation of the inner pipeline cavity and detection of the necessity for cleaning;

determination of the type of pollution inside the gas pipelines to choose process
operations and cleaning techniques;
reasoning of cleaning frequency of the pipeline or its sections;

implementation of the pipeline cleaning procedures;

evaluation of the cleaning technical results;

evaluation of economical efficiency of the pipeline cleaning procedures.


Types of pollution

There can be the following in the gas pipelines cavities:

foreign bodies that got there during building, for example, soil, stones,
etc.;

water accumulation; condensate accumulation;

sand and clay particles that are carried out with the gas;

iron oxides; corrosion product .

hydrates that may form during gas transportation process.


The foreign bodies remain inside the gas pipeline cavity
during its poor blow jobs and cleaning during building and
commissioning.

Accumulation of water, condensate, sand, or any other


mechanical mixture is the result of a poor gas preparation and
dewatering machine operation both at the main and the intermediate
compressor stations.

Water accumulation in the gas pipelines cavity is also formed


because of its incomplete removal after hydraulic test and placing
the gas pipeline into service.
Iron oxides are formed in the result of the inner pipe wall
surfaces corrosion and formation (if present in gas) of oxidation
components (hydrogen sulphide, carbon diaoxide, and water).
Natural gas, saturated with water vapors, may form solid
compounds with water hydrates, under appropriate
thermodynamic conditions (under high pressure and appropriate
above-zero temperature).
The following conditions are required
for hydrates formation:

appropriate pressure and temperature;

appropriate gas composition;

appropriate water composition;

presence of free water (if there is water in the


form of vapor, hydrates do not form);

hydrates formation accelerates turbulization


(mixing of gas and water).
Methods for pipeline cleaning

At pipelines the most popular cleaning mechanical method of internal cavity


is by means of pigs, separators and pistons.
