Automated Central Office Switches and Exchanges

The document discusses the history and evolution of automated telephone switching systems. It describes some of the key innovations including: 1) Almon Brown Strowger invented the first automated switching system using electromechanical relays to allow subscribers to directly instruct the switch without an operator. 2) Mechanical dialers then allowed subscribers to manually dial telephone numbers. 3) Early switches like the Strowger switch used electromechanical technology while later crossbar switches used contact points on horizontal and vertical bars. 4) Modern electronic switching systems use digital electronics and computer control to connect telephone circuits and establish calls.

Automated Switching
System

A system of sensors, switches, and other electrical and

electronic devices that allows subscribers to give
instructions directly to the switch without having to go
through an operator
Almon Brown Strowger
He invented the first
automated switching
system using
electromechanical
relays.

Electromechanical
relay
- Controls the circuit by
opening and closing the
contacts of that circuit
- It can divert the current
from present circuit to
another
Mechanical Dialer
Allowed
subscribers to
manually dial the
telephone
number of the
party they
wished to call.
STROWGER SWITCH
Commonly called
for stepper or
step-by-step
(SXS) switch.
Crossbar switch

It uses set of
contact points
mounted on
horizontal and
vertical bars.
Electronic switching
system
It uses digital
electronics and
computerized
control to
interconnect
telephone
circuits for the
purpose of
establishing
telephone calls.
Circuits, Circuit
Switches, and
Circuit Switching
Circuit
-Simply the path over which voice,
data, or video signals propagate.

Circuit Switch
-A programmable matrix that allows
circuits to be connected to one
another.
Local Telephone
Exchanges and
Exchange Areas
Local Exchanges
Exchanges connected directly to local loops.

(a) No Interconnections (b) 874-3333 connected to

874-4444
In the days of manual patch panels, each
exchange was given a name such as Bronx,
Redwood, Swift, Downtown, Main and so on.
The first 2-digits of a telephone number were
derived from the first 2-letters of the exchange
name.

Example:
BRONX - B=2;R=7

270-0000 to 279-9999

Using this system, a 7-digit telephone number

can accommodate 100, 000 telephone
number.
