Maslow's theory of self-actualization proposes a hierarchy of human needs with physiological needs at the bottom and self-actualization needs at the top. Lower needs must be satisfied before higher needs can be fulfilled. This theory has implications for education in that students with unsatisfied basic needs will have less psychological energy for learning. Schools have responded by providing programs to meet deficit needs for food, safety, belonging, and esteem so students can focus on growth needs like knowledge and self-actualization. Effective teachers help students feel accepted to motivate learning.

Introduction
The theory of self actualization was developed by Abraham
Maslow in 1954 ,a professor of Psychology.
Laid down the important need and argued that it is the
intensity of need which lead to activity.
A need is the lack of something which would leaned to
further the welfare of an organism to facilities as usual
behaviour.

An organism/human
being in the tension if the
needs are not satisfied.
The organism make efforts
to release his tension.
Thus, need is factor of
motivation.

earlier four needs are satisfied.
Self actualization means, A musician
must make music, an artist must paint, a
poet must write, if he is to be ultimately
happy. What a man can be, he must be.

The relationship between


deficit needs and growth needs
Obviously, students who are
very hungry or in physical danger
will have little psychological
energy to put into learning

Schools and
government agencies
recognized that if
students basic needs
are not met, learning
will suffer

They have respond by


providing free breakfast
and lunch program. The
most important deficit
needs however, are
those for love and self
esteem.

Student do not feel that


they are loved and they are
capable are unlikely to have a
strong motivation to achieve
the higher level growth
objective such as the search
for knowledge and
understanding for their own

ideas that are characteristic of
the self actualizing person.

Abraham Maslow proposed that a motivational behaviour


may satisfy many needs at the same time, thus implying that
an act is multi motivated.

He has classified the human needs in a hierarchical


order of the need is useful for teaching learning situation.

The teacher job is to indentify the level of need so that


he/she may select appropriate technique of motivation.
