Esperanza lives with her mother and grandmother in Mexico in 1924. Her father taught her to care for the land before he unexpectedly passed away. After her father's death, her uncle Luis claims the land and proposes to Esperanza's mother. When she refuses, their house mysteriously burns down. Esperanza, her mother, and grandmother must now move to the United States to start over, leaving Abuelita behind to heal from an injury. Abuelita's blanket symbolizes that though times are hard, things will get better for Esperanza in America.

Esperanzas papa taught Esperanza that the Earth is alive

so you have to take care of it and treat it well.
Aguantate tantito y la fruta caer en tu mano, Wait a little while
and the fruit will fall into your hand.

Las Uvas
Harvest year is Esperanzas favorite year because when the picking
is done it will be Esperanzas birthday.
When Esperanza was picking out a red bloom a thorn pricked her
finger which meant bad luck.
When Esperanza found out that Papa died her heart dropped. Then
when she tried to talk it turned into a cry and she was in disbelief.

Las Papayas
When Esperanzas papa had died he handed his land to Tio Luis
since it is not customary to leave land to a women.
Miguel is Hortensias, the housekeeper, son and he also Alfonsos
son.
If Mama had been able to own Papas land it would be a whole
different story because she wouldnt have to deal with Tio Luis
asking her to marry him. Also she wouldnt have to regret or worry
about Tio Luis doing something bad to her to change her mind
about marrying him.

Los Higos
I think that Tio Luis set Esperanzas house on fire because he said
that Mama would regret her decision so his threat meant putting her
house on fire.
Abuelita is staying behind in Mexico because, due to the fire she
injured her ankle and she has to wait to go to the USA so her ankle
can heal.
The zigzags on Abuelitas blanket meant that even though
Esperanzas life has been pretty tough with her house burning down
and her dad dying. Its going to be alright especially when she gets a
new start in the United States. When Abuelita said that she is at the
bottom of the valley, since she is having a tough time and soon she
will be at the top of the mountain again when she moves to the U.S.
