Topic: Computer Terminology


(Level: Midwifery 1st year)

Computer Terminology
Computer: An electronic devise that is capable of
(1) accepting, storing, and logically manipulating data
or text that input and (2) processing and producing
output (results or decisions) on the basis of stored
programs of instructions.
Terminology comes from term and logos. Term
means a word or phrase used to describe a thing or
to express a concept, especially in a particular kind of
language or branch of study. Logos means a symbol
or other design adopted by an organization to identify
its products, uniform, vehicles, etc.
Terminology is the body of terms used with a
particular technical application in a subject of study,
theory, profession, etc.

Hardware: All the


parts of the computer
that you can touch: the
monitor, CPU, printer,
mouse, and keyboard.
Hard Drive: Hard Drive
is the place inside your
computer where
programs and files are
stored.

Central Processing Unit
(CPU): Where all of the
information you put into the
computer is stored.
Monitor: The display screen
of a computer.
Desktop: The electronic
work area on a display
screen. The screen
you see first when your
computer turns on.

Keyboard: Like a
typewriter, its where you
type and enter numbers. It
is one way to tell the
computer what you want it
to do.
Mouse. A hand operated
electronic device used to
move a cursor or pointer
on the display screen.

Icon: Symbols or
pictures that you can click
on to perform an action.
Each program has its own
icon.
Cursor: The line or
arrow that follows your
mouse movement.

Document: Anything you


create in Microsoft Word is
called a document.
Microsoft word: A
word-processing program for
typing letters, resumes,
school papers and more.

Modem. An acronym
derived from
modulator/demodulator. A
device that (1) converts
digital signals into tones for
transmission over telephone
lines and (2) converts the
tones back into digital
signals at the receiving end.

Clicking: Pointing to something on the screen
and then pushing the button on the mouse is called
clicking.
File: A piece of computer information such as a
document or part of a computer program.
Folder: Just like a file folder in a filing cabinet, a
file is where documents (letters, spreadsheets, etc.)
are kept.
Font: The way letters and words look.
Format: Changing the way that text looks on the
page.

Highlight/Selecting: Click and drag across a word
or sentence to highlight it. When it is highlighted you
can make changes to it.
Italics: A font style that slants words to the right.
Bold: A font style that makes letters and words
darker.

Menu Bar: The words at the top of the screen. Click
on these words and you see menus of other things you
can do.
Menu: A list of other things you can do. You see a
menu when you click on one of the words on the Menu
Bar.
Programs: Another word for software or applications.
Tool Bars: The bars across the top of the screen that
have icons you click on to do different things.
Scroll Bars: The bars on the sides of the screen that
allow you to move up or down the page.

Virus: A computer program designed to damage


computer file.
Worm: A computer file designed to do damage that
goes through a computer and possibly a network.
WWW (world wide web): One small part of the
Internet that allows access to text, graphics, sound, and
video. Free information can be found on the world
wide web.
RAM Random access memory. Memory that the
computer user can access. It can be changed if
necessary (resaving a word processing document). The
computer's working memory.
