Industrial Engineering

The document discusses product design and development. It describes the 5 stages of product design as conception, acceptance, execution, translation, and pre-production. Each stage is defined with key activities. It also outlines 6 factors that affect product design: marketing aspects, functional aspects, operational aspects, durability/dependability, aesthetic aspects, and economic analysis. The document then discusses standardization and simplification as approaches to product development. Standardization aims to ensure requirements are met with minimum variety economically, while simplification reduces varieties and sizes.

Short note on :Simplification &

INTRODUCTION
Product design is the first step
immediately after accepting the
concept of product.
The purpose of product design and
analysis is to determine and specify
products that will be profitable to
manufactures and distributors and
will give human satisfaction.

PRODUCT DESIGN STAGES

CONCEPTION
ACCEPTANCE
EXECUTION
TRANSLATION
PRE-PRODUCTION

1. CONCEPTION
The specifications of the proposed product
must be prepared by marketing department
as much details as possible .Ex.
1. The performance requirements
2. The appearance or styling requirements
3. The estimated quantity to be sold
4. The max. price within which the product is
sold
5. The date of introduction of the product.

2. ACCEPTANCE
In this stage , the design activity of
the product begins after the
feasibility analysis and model making
and calculations of the product is
accepted.

3. EXECUTION
A model is prepared in this stage
which is going to reveal the detail
aspect of proposed designs and
special considerations.
The cost of the product is built at
this stage which the production
engineers always try to stick to it.
Now the advanced techniques like
Rapid Prototyping Technique(RPT)
and Experimental stress analysis
techniques are available for

4. TRANSLATION
At this stage the production
engineering department is involved
in design work.
The manufacturing feasibility is
tested at this stage.
The final manufacturing drawing are
prepared.

5. PRE-PRODUCTION
This will consist of completely
assembling quantity of production
from parts which will be found in the
final manufacture.
Pre-Production stage will check the
following:
I. Drawing
II. Final Tools
III. Production techniques and
estimates

FACTORS AFFECTING PRODUCT

Marketing Aspects
Functional Aspects
Operational Aspects
Durability & Dependability
Aesthetic Aspects
Economic Analysis

1.MARKETING ASPECTS
It is very important to know the
marketability of the product.
Thus marketing aspect which analyses
the factors that affect the demand for
the product is an important step.

2. FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS

This analysis helps in analyzing the

importance and worth each function
to be built into the product and
hence, affects the design of the

3. OPERATIONAL ASPECTS
The operational aspects becomes all
the important as it is the customer
who is going to operate at his place
and care should be taken to see that
the product have ease of operation.
The designer has to analyze the
preparation time, operation time and
put away time with respect to the
customer.

4. DURABILITY & DEPENDABILITY

Durability refers to the length of the
active life of the product under given
working conditions.
Dependability refers to the reliability
with which the product serves its
intended function.
Quality of the product is directly
proportional to the quality of inputs to
the process of manufacture. Thus it is a
function of cost.

5. AESTHETIC ASPECTS
It refers to the external good look
aspect of the product.
Aesthetic aspects help the sell function
of the product of the product by
attracting the customers and creating
the first impression about the product.
For customer goods aesthetics is the
dominant factor in creating demand for
the product.

6. ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
An economic analysis is the key to the
management decision in product design
policy.
Once the sufficient information on the
marketability of the product is obtained
and various aspect of the product like
functional, operational and aesthetic are
studied about the proposed product.
Manufacturing cost is calculated. After
adding profit margin sales price is decided
by company.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
The creation of products with new or
different characteristics that offer
new or additional benefits to the
customer.
Product development may involve
modification of an existing product or
its presentation or formulation of an
entirely new product that satisfies a
newly defined customer want or
market niche.

Following factors are to be taken into

account while designing a product:
(1)External appearance of a manufactured
product.
(2)The customers long term satisfaction.
(3)The number, type and complexity of a
products components which affect the type
of suppliers. Also type of components
affects the production processes, capital
investment, personnel skill etc.

STEPS IN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

1. Identification of customer need
2. Idea generation to satisfy needs
3. Screening and evaluation the
potential of the new product idea
4. Business analysis to estimate
economic feasibility
5. Development & Testing
6. Commercialization

DESIGN OF PRODUCTION SYSTEM

STANDARDIZATION
Standardization is a process of
defining and applying the conditions
necessary to ensure that given range
of requirements can normally be met
with a minimum of variety and
economic manner on basis of the
best current technique.

ADVANTAGES

Reduction in inventory
Reduction of waste and obsolescence
Ease in procurement
Reduced effort in book keeping and
accounting
Increased margin of profit
Reduction in maintenance and repair
cost

APPLICATION
Finished products e.g. cars and T.V.
Sub assemblies and components e.g.
automobile gear boxes and auto
electric bulbs
Material e.g. both direct materials
(plain carbon and alloy steel) and
indirect materials such as oils and
greases.
Production equipments e.g. machine
tools, press , welding equipments

SIMPLIFICATION
Simplification means elimination of
superfluous varieties, sizes etc.
It means reduction the number of
varieties.
It is not able to meet the needs of
wide range of customer preferences
is its limitation.

ADVANTAGES
Reduction of buying/selling effort due
to less variety.
Reduced inventory
Greater use of storage space and
better plant utilization.
