Turning
HARD TURNING
Hard turning is a turning done on materials with
aRockwell Chardness greater than 45
It is typically performed after the workpiece
isheat treated
The process is intended to replace or limit
traditional grinding operations
when applied for purely stock removal purposes,
competes favorably with rough grinding
It is used for gears, injection pump components,
hydraulic components etc
HARDENED STEEL
The termhardened steelis often used for
amedium or high carbonsteel
The steel is given heat treatment and then
quenching
followed
bytempering
Components made of hardened steel have a
hard exterior casing and a robust core
Arbors, axles, link components, driving pinions,
camshafts etc uses this steel
Types of hardened steel include ATS34,CPM440V
CBN TOOL
Cubic boron nitride(CBN) is a highperformance tool material from a
polycrystalline mass
It is produced in a high temperaturepressure process
Its hardness only surpassed by a diamond
suitable for machining of materials that
cannot be machined with PCD or
monocrystalline diamond
CBN vs PCD
They differ in their thermal stability
PCD(Polycristalline Diamond tool) looses
its thermal stability at higher temperature
Unlike PCD, CBN maintains it thermal
stability at elevated temperature
PCD are used for machining of Non-Ferrous
metals
During hard turning of steel, PCD reacts
with steel so CBN is preffered
