ET4254 Introduction

This document provides an introduction to the course ET4254 RF Integrated Circuit Design. The course will be taught by Leo de Vreede, Marco Spirito and Masoud Babaie. Students will learn how to design RF integrated circuits, including RF system architectures, building blocks like mixers and oscillators, and passive components. Assessment will include homework assignments involving designs of transmission lines, mixers and oscillators, comprising 50% of the grade. A written exam will cover theory and applied concepts from the course, making up the other 50% of the grade. The goal is for students to learn how to design complete RF integrated circuits.

RF IC Design, more than just transistors

So, what is on chip?

In
conventional
RF circuits the
transistors only
occupy a very
small area of the
total IC. Most
area of the is
consumed by
the passive
devices

RFIC needs to be tested in the final application, realization

Goal of this course (ET4254)

Learn how to design an RFIC!
Including:
RF wireless system architectures
RF building blocks: LNA, AGC, PA, Mixer,
VCO, PLL etc
RF passive components
ESD protection and packaging

The Instructors
Marco Spirito (S01-M08) received the M.Sc. degree
(cum laude) in electrical engineering from the University
of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, in 2000, and the
Ph.D. degree from the Delft University of Technology,
Delft, The Netherlands, in 2006. In April 2008 he joined
the Electronics Research Laboratory at the Delft
University of Technology as an Assistant Professor,
where he is an Associate Professor since April 2013. His
research interests include the characterization of highly
efficient and linear power amplifiers, the development of
advanced characterization setups for millimeter and
sub-millimeter waves, and the integration of mm-wave
sensing systems.
Dr. Spirito was the recipient in 2002 of the Best Student
Paper Award for his contribution BCTM contribution, the
IEEE MTT Society Microwave Prize in 2008, was a corecipient of the best student paper award at SiRF topical
meeting 2011 and at the IEEE RFIC 2011.

The Instructors (Cont.)

(on a good day)

Leo C. N. de Vreede was born in Delft, the Netherlands in 1965. He

received the Ph.D. degree (cum laude) from Delft University of Technology in
1996. In 1988 he joined the Laboratory of Telecommunication and Remote
Sensing Technology of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Delft
University of Technology. In 1996, he was appointed as assistant professor at
the Delft University of Technology working on the nonlinear distortion
behavior of bipolar transistors at Delft Institute of Microelectronics and
Submicron Technology (DIMES). In the winter season of 98-99 he was a

California.
In '99 and 15 he was appointed as an associate professor respectively full
professor at the Delft University of Technology and became responsible for
the Microwave Components Group and the Electronics Research Laboratory.
Since that time he worked on RF solutions for improved linearity and RF
performance at the device, circuit and system level. He is co-founder/advisor
of Anteverta-mw a company specialized in RF device characterization, cofounder of DiTIQ, a company focusing on fully digital energy-efficient
wideband transmitters. He is (co)recipient of the IEEE Microwave prize in
2008, mentor of the Else Kooi prize awarded PhD work in 2010 and mentor
