Sectional Views
 The purpose of sectional views on drawings is to show internal or
invisible details as clearly as possible.

 The interior construction of machines, machine parts or other


objects cannot be described clearly with hidden lines.

 A sectionals view not only shows these details but generally helps
in understanding them.

 A sectional view on a drawing is placed next to the view.

 The view is projected perpendicularly to the cutting plane.

Sectional Views (Features)
 A sectional view is made by passing an imaginary cutting plane
through an object.
 The plane is perpendicular to the line of sight.
 The portion of the object that is between the observer and the
cutting plane is thought of as having been removed.

Sectional Views (Features)
 The surface that is cut by the cutting plane is shown by cross-section
lines.

 The cross-section lines are thin and may be drawn in different patterns.

Cutting Plane Lines
 Cutting plane lines, which show where the cutting plane passes through
the object, represent the edge view of the cutting plane and are drawn in
the view(s) adjacent to the section view.

Section Lines Technique
 The general purpose cast iron section line is sketched at a 45° angle and
spaced 1/16” (1.5 mm) to 1/8”(3 mm) or more depending on the side of
the drawing. As a general rule use 1/8” spacing. Section lines are
sketched as thin (0.35 mm or 0.016 inch). Using an H or 2H pencil.

perpendicular nor parallel.

Treatment of Hidden Lines
 A section view reveals hidden features without the use of hidden lines
(Figure 1). Adding hidden lines to a section view complicates the drawing
defeating the purpose of using a section. There are times however when a
minimum number of hidden lines are needed to represent features other than
the primary one shown by the section (Figure 2).
