Energy Efficient Cluster Head Selection Using Fuzzy Logic IN Wireless Sensor Networks

This document proposes using fuzzy logic to select energy efficient cluster heads in wireless sensor networks. It discusses how sensor nodes consume significant energy and have non-replaceable batteries. Cluster-based routing can help optimize energy usage by selecting high-energy nodes as cluster heads. The document outlines a fuzzy logic approach to select cluster heads based on residual energy, node concentration, and expected residual energy. Cluster heads are selected to balance energy usage across the network and prolong its lifetime.

WIRELESS

NETWORKS

OVERVIEW
A

wireless sensor network is composed of

large number of sensor nodes which
communicate with each other
Sensor nodes consumes more amount of
energy and their batteries are not
replaceable leading to more energy
consumption
One of possible solution for optimal use of
available energy is by using cluster based
routing protocols
Hierarchical or cluster based routing is well
known technique and it is used for scalability
and efficient communication

Cluster

heads are elected based on the fuzzy set

theory and the fuzzy rule base
Previously many routing protocols such as
LEACH,CHEF,PEGASIS,UHEED etc and algorithms
are used for energy efficiency and lifetime
improvement
But they meet various issues like
It is possible no or lots of CHs are selected
CHs are not selected in a distributed manner
More network traffics

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The

primary objective is to improve the

energy efficiency through various
protocols by the use of different
parameters
Appropriate cluster head election can
significantly reduce energy consumption
and prolong the lifetime of the network
Fuzzy clustering algorithms use fuzzy
logic for blending different parameters
to select cluster heads

CLUSTER HEAD ELECTION

Fuzzy logic approach for cluster head

election is proposed based on three
descriptors
namely
residual
energy,concentration
and
expected
residual energy
Each member nodes select their own
cluster heads based on the value of
Centroid.
The
cluster head election is done
effectively with the help of matlab

MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS

The membership function for residual

energy is calculated as follows:
low (x)
= {1 x<0.2
0.3-x/0.1 0.2<=x<=0.3
0
x>0.5}
medium (x) =
{0 x<0.2
X-0.2/0.3 0.2<=x<=0.5
0.6-x/0.1 0.5<=x<=0.6
0
x>0.6}
hi gh (x )
=
{0 x<0.5
X-0.5/0.3
0.5<=x<=0.8
1
x>0.8}

From the above membership rules, the chance for the cluster
to be elected as a cluster head is obtained and the centroid
value is calculated by generating rule viewer in matlab

Rule Viewer
Centroid

is considered as one of the

most popular defuzzification method
Centroid defuzzification method is
used to find the final crisp number,
which represents the CH priority value
The COG method is calculated as
follows:
COG = A (x) * xdx / A (x)dx
(X) is degree of membership function
of set A

CLUSTER FORMATION
Clustering

is a group of similar objects and

each cluster is managed by a node denoted
as cluster head (CH) and other nodes are
referred as cluster nodes.
Each
cluster
head
performs
the
transmission by sending an announcement
message to all the other sensor nodes to
join its network
After each node has decided to which
cluster it belongs, it must inform the
cluster-head node that it will be a member
of the cluster.

Each

node transmits information back to the

cluster-head again using a transmission
protocol.
During this phase, all cluster-head nodes
must keep their receivers on.
Each cluster head and the sensor nodes are
provided with the unique ID and the address.

FURTHER WORK
The

third phase is transmission

phase where the sensor nodes will
have to transmit the data between
each other
Transmission phase involves two
stages namely intracluster and
intercluster transmission
Routing can be performed by using
an energy efficient algorithm
