Grid Computing

Grid computing involves connecting multiple computers together to share resources and work collaboratively on large computational tasks. It originated in the 1990s as a way to access computer power as easily as electric power. Key benefits of grid computing include sharing large-scale resources virtually, running applications on different machines if the existing one is busy, and enabling cost-effective supercomputing capabilities from inexpensive connected computers worldwide. Challenges include evolving grid software and standards and a learning curve to implement grid systems.

What is Grid?
A grid computer is multiple number of same class of

computers clustered together. A grid computer is

connected through a super fast network and share the
devices like disk drives, mass storage, printers and RAM
Operating system has capability of parallelism and a cost
efficient respect to super computing
Grid computing combines computers from multiple

administrative domains to reach a common goal, to solve

a single task, and may then disappear just as quickly.

A computational grid is a hardware and software infrastructure that provides
dependable, consistent, pervasive, and inexpensive access to high-end
computational facilities

Related Technologies
Cluster computing
Peer-to-peer computing
Internet computing

Cluster computing
The main idea to put

some PCs together and

get them to
communicate.
Used to load balance

traffic on high traffic

websites.
Used as relatively low
cost form of parallel
processing.

Peer to Peer computing

The main idea is to

connect with other

computers.
Can access files from any

computer on the
network.
Allows data sharing
without going through
central server.

Internet Computing
The main idea is to

connect many idle PCs

on the Internet
Can perform other

computations while not

being used.

Topologies of Grid
Intragrid-comprised of a

basic set of Grid services

within a single
organization.
Extragrid-It based on
bringing together two or
more intragrid
Intergrid-It found in
dynamic network access
to the grid via the
internet/WAN.

Comparison b/w GRID AND Cloud

Computing
Cloud computing is a

technology that invites
businesses to become
virtual.
Provides high scalability,
a complete secured
environment, costeffective and extremely
reliable.

a shared environment on
a common computer
system from multiple
administrative domains.
Provides multiple

speed, distribution of
resources convenient and

CPU Scavenging
CPU-scavenging,

creates a grid from the

unused resources in a
network of participants.
This technique uses pc
instruction cycles that
otherwise will be wasted
throughout the day
when the computer is
waiting for user input or
slow devices or during
night.

Marketing segment of
Grid computing
For the segmentation of the grid computing market, two perspectives
need to be considered: the provider side and the user side
The provider side consist of grid-enabled market, the utility
computing market, and the software-as-a-service (SaaS) market and
enables the sharing of heterogeneous resources, and Virtual
Organizations major companies are Sun Microsystems, IBM, and HP.
The IT deployment strategy as well as the type of IT investments
made are relevant aspects for potential grid users and play an
important role for grid adoption.

Advantage of Grid
1)GRID

COMPUTING FOCUSES ON SHARING OF

LARGE SCALE OF RESOURCES WHICH ARE VIRTUAL
TO US , INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS AND ALWAYS
ON IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE.
2)SYSTEMS CONNECTED IN A GRID CAN BE
INEXPENSIVE AND LOCATED WORLD-WIDE, AS
OPPOSED TO HIGH-END COMPUTING.
3)ENABLES AN APPLICATION TO RUN ON A
DIFFERENT MACHINE, WHOSE EXISTING MACHINE
MAY BE BUSY.

Limitation of Grid

GRID SOFTWARE AND STANDARDS

ARE STILL EVOLVING
LEARNING CURVE TO GET STARTED
NON-INTERACTIVE JOB SUBMISSION

Conclusion

GRID COMPUTING IS AN EFFECTIVE WAY OF

MANAGING A NETWORKED COMMUNITY.
IT ALLOWS A VERY SPEEDY DOWNLOAD OF DATA AND
THAT TOO MANY FILES WITHOUT COLLAPSING THE
SYSTEM.
IT WORKS EVEN ON IDLE SYSTEMS BY TAPPING THE
CPU POTENTIAL.
