Teach Me App: Reviews

By: Erobinson (August 8, 2010)
Amazing for my 5 year old - he's addicted
My 5 year old actually asks to play this INSTEAD of watching his one hour of TV each day! That is
awesome. He diggs the idea that he earns coins and gets ton spend them on digital stickers in the game.
Even my 4 year old likes to play. She doesn't have all of the skills with the spelling and sight words that my 5
year old does, but the math has a feature to help her count to the answers. So she gets rewarded too.
Actually, they both love it so much that we have had to create a schedule for them to each get their
"homework" time. Amazing that this has captured their attention so incredibly much.

Great for kids with disabilities!

I have been using this app as part of our homeschool curriculum. I find it a perfect addition for my
son, who has Down Syndrome. He loves it! It explains the concepts of math quite well!

Story Patch App

Kids with disabilities learn how to
read and write stories.

With Story Patch, children use

their imaginations and creativity
to create their characters as they
see fit.

Story Patch has different ways to

create your story. With or without
the help of the app.

Classroom Potential
With the Story Patch app, elementary students
may enrich their creativity. Using the different
user interfaces, children of any age may use
their skills, creativity, and enthusiasm, children
can have help to build the stories the come up
with or can build their stories on their own. This
app gives children the opportunity to learn how
a sentence is structured, grammatically and
spelling correctly, they are able to learn to read
proficiently, becoming more proud of
themselves and become interested in what is
being taught to them. They can also bring what
they have learned from the app, to the
classroom, allowing the teacher and other
students to enjoy, learn, and spread their
creativity to others. When finished with their
stories, they can share them through email or
different communication outlets, go in at a later
date and edit their previous works as well.

What is the Appropriate Age

Group?
The app developers present a skills level that reads
for the different skills built in using this app. For
cognitive skills 18 months to 18 years old, for fine
motor skills 18 months to 3 years of age, for language
18 months to 18 years of age, and for visual skills 18
months to 18 years. I would personally recommend
this app to the second grade group of students or
those with disabilities in this area at any age.

HOW TO USE THIS APP

a. This is a great app for kids and families to use to write and illustrate story books. A child can use
included images or their own photos to illustrate the story. The included images are customizable.
There is also a story builder function. In the story builder, the child chooses from a list of 14 topics
such as A Rainy Day or Today Is My Birthday. The child then answers a few questions about the
topic and his/herself. The app then generates a story that the child illustrates with their own iPhoto
images or the included images. We added Google images to our iPhoto and used them in our story
as well. After the book is complete, you can email it in PDF format and then print it or view on a
computer. We used this app with children at the developmental age of 3 years old and above. Their
diagnoses were autism, Down syndrome and speech delay. Ideas for therapy - Make a book with
target articulation sounds. Make a social story. Make a book prior to a field trip (Google images
from the zoo, etc.) Help the child make a book to take home and show his/her family what he/she
did at school. Make a book with target vocabulary. Make a scrapbook of summer vacation, etc. to
share with the childs class. Work on IEP goals of prepositions/pronouns/plurals/opposites by
making a book with the child using the target concept. Print the book for the child to take home for
homework. I like the face that this app gives children the ease of expressing themselves, on a level
of no rejection or harsh feelings. I like the fact that at the same time of children learning how to
use their creativity, create stories, and how to correctly do so while learning how to read at the
same time.

What are the costs and equipment

needed to use Story Patch?
The cost of the app is $2.99 and the
equipment requirements are iPad, that
may also require the use of a smart
board or other types of projectors if
using this app as an in-class project.
