01 Farm Mechanization

This document introduces farm mechanization. It defines mechanization as using machines to replace human and animal energy for agricultural tasks. The objectives of mechanization in agriculture are to increase productivity per worker, make farm work less arduous and more attractive, reduce drudgery, and improve timeliness and quality. Mechanization is critical due to rural migration, labor shortages, an aging farm population, increasing food demand, and fewer producers. Machines are more effective and efficient than human labor. Reasons for mechanization include increasing productivity, supplementing labor shortages, completing tasks on schedule, removing drudgery, and improving yields and product quality.

INTRODUCTION TO FARM

MECHANIZATION
What is mechanization?
The use of machines to replace human and
animal energy
What about wheelbarrows?
Compact tractors?
Tapping knives?
Mechanized wheelbarrows?
Harvesting pole?
Tractor-mounted fertilizer broadcaster?

In agriculture, mechanization has the
objective

To increase the productivity per
agricultural workers.

To change the character of farm work,
making it less arduous and more
attractive.

Reduce the drudgery of farm work

To increase the timeliness and quality
of farm work

Why mechanization is critical in
agricultural sector?

Rural-urban migration
Labor shortages
An aging population remaining in the
agricultural sector
Increase in number of mouths to feed
Decrease in number of producers
Man as a power unit is very ineffective and
inefficient.
High production cost (labor) - reduces
dependency on labor

Engineering technology in agriculture means mechanization
Reasons for Mechanization
To increase the productivity per agricultural worker
To supplement the labor shortage
To complete the agricultural operations like land preparation,
planting, harvesting, threshing operation at the right time and
complete them according to schedule of planting of next crop;
To remove the drudgery of agricultural works
To increase the productivity per unit of land
Improve the quality of products through better processing and
handling. Most farm products are affected adversely by high
temperature and humidity.

Disadvantages of
mechanization
Soil compaction
Formation of hard pan
Loss of soil structure
Reduction in yield
Reduction in quality

Types of tractors
Categorized according to
Power output
Compact
Medium
Large
Number of drive wheels
Two wheel
Four wheel
Special function

Engine Systems

1. Fuel and Air System
2. Ignition System
3. Electrical System
4. Cooling System
5. Lubrication System
6. Transmission System
Land suitability
Level land or slope < 12 degree

Have improved primary and secondary
road can be used all the time.
Safety rules
Ground often rough
Steep slope
Poor traction
High center of gravity
No suspension except at operators seat
All the above make tractor driving quite
dangerous
Ten safety commandments
1. Know your tractor and implements
2. Use Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS)
3. Familiarize yourself with work area
4. Dont start engine in closed garage
5. Shield your Power Take Off (PTO)
6. Keep hitches low
7. Stop tractor completely before getting off
8. Dont refuel when engines hot
9. Keep children away
10. Never hurry
