Introduction - Video Editing
com
Editing is part of the creative post-
production process of filmmaking/Video.
Editor works with the raw footage,
selecting shots and combining them
into sequences to create a finished motion
picture.
Editor must creatively work with the layers of
images, story, dialogue, music, pacing, as
well as the actors' performances to
effectively "re-imagine" and even rewrite
the film to craft a cohesive whole.
Early films by Edison (whose company invented a
motion camera and projector) and others were short
films that were one long, static, locked-down shot.
Motion in the shot was all that was necessary to
amuse an audience, so the first films simply showed
activity such as traffic moving on a city street. There
was no story and no editing.
In 1899, Edison hired Edwin Stanton Porter and soon
put him in charge of his New York motion picture
studio.
Porter is generally thought to be the first American
filmmaker who experimented with film editing. Porter
worked on a number of minor films before
making Life of an American Fireman in 1903.

Linear Editing
Linear video editing is a video editing post-production process of
selecting, arranging and modifying images and sound in a
predetermined, ordered sequence. Regardless of whether it was
captured by a video camera, tapeless camcorder, or recorded in a
television studio on a video tape recorder (VTR) the content must be
accessed sequentially. For the most part video editing software has
replaced linear editing.
Non Linear Editing
A non-linear editing system (NLE) is
a video (NLVE) or audio editing (NLAE) digital
audio workstation (DAW) system that
performs non-destructive editing on source
material. The name is in contrast to 20th century
methods of linear video editing and film editing.
The first truly non-linear editor, the CMX 600, was
introduced in 1971 by CMX Systems, a joint venture
between CBS and Memorex. It recorded & played
back black-and-white analog video recorded in
"skip-field" mode on modified disk pack drives the size
of washing machines. These were commonly used to
store about half an hour of data digitally on
mainframe computers of the time. The 600 had a
console with 2 monitors built in. The right monitor,
which played the preview video, was used by the
editor to make cuts and edit decisions using a light
pen. The editor selected from options superimposed
as text over the preview video. The left monitor was
used to display the edited video.

Evaluate and select scenes in terms of the story line
that improves the value or story continuity.
Edit raw footage and review assembled videotape
on screen or monitor to make any color corrections,
or other video quality corrections.
Trims or crops video segments to specified edits and
reassembles segments in sequence that presents the
story with maximum effect and within the final
projects parameters. For example, a video editor
might be asked to review 15 hours of video to make
a half-hour infomercial.
Use professional digital editing software and
equipment, such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Apples
Final Cut Pro, to insert music, narration and dialogue
and sound effects to a video.
Add any sound effects needed from
video sound libraries or websites.
Add any royalty free music from music
sound libraries or websites.
Adds any title graphics, banner graphics,
watermarks to video project as needed.
Creates or adds intros or out-tros to video
as needed or requested by client.
