Ceramic Matrix Composites

Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) were developed to improve on the weaknesses of monolithic ceramics while retaining their desirable properties. CMCs combine ceramic matrices with fiber reinforcements to improve fracture toughness. They offer higher temperature capability than polymer or metal matrix composites, with continuous operation temperatures up to 1000°C depending on the matrix material. Common matrix materials include oxides like alumina and non-oxides like silicon carbide, while common fiber reinforcements include carbon, silicon carbide and aluminum oxide. CMCs are manufactured using high-temperature processes like chemical vapor infiltration to avoid residual stresses from differences in thermal expansion between the materials. Applications of CMCs include aerospace, high-temperature

Conclusion

A properly designed and fabricated composite
material can retain its attractive high strength
and stiffness at very high temp but without the
brittleness and lack of reliability inherent with
monolithic ceramics
