Importance of Taper in Endodontics: Presented By: Dr. Chintan Makadia

Taper in endodontic instruments is important for effective cleaning and filling of the root canal. Different tapers exist, with larger tapers (%) indicating more taper along the length of the instrument. Taper is important for creating a continuously tapering cone shape to the canal, keeping the apical opening small. Larger tapers help with cleaning but smaller tapers reduce risk of ledging. A variety of endodontic instruments with different tapers now exist to help shape the canal for effective irrigation, cleaning, and filling.

Concept of Taper Instruments & Materials Significance of Taper in endodontic Instrumentation Conclusion

What is Taper?

The Taper is expressed as the amount the file diameter increases each millimetre along its working surface from the tip toward the file handle.

Different Taper

Taper is Expressed in terms of percentage #.02 taper is a 2% taper

#.04 Taper is 4 % taper # .06 Taper is 6 % taper

Variable Vs. Constant Taper

Why Taper ???

Mechanical objectives of root canal preparation :by Schilder)

The root canal preparation should develop a continuously

tapering cone.

Making the canal narrower apically and widest coronally. Keep the apical opening as small as possible.

Making the preparation in multiple plane which introduces the concept of Flow. Avoid transportation of foramen.

Why Taper ???

Enhanced cleaning efficacy Enhanced obturation efficacy Less Instruments Needed Decrease Preparation Time

Small Taper Vs. Large Taper

The larger tapered files have the shortest working surface lengths, while the smaller more vulnerable tapered files have longer working lengths with greater areas for potential engagement.

Instrumentation
One The
of the most important considerations for rotary instrumentation is utilizing the advantage of changing file tapers. reduction of stress on the instruments can significantly be achieved by minimizing engagement with this technique.

Instrumentation
There are two ways to shape a canal with Larger Taper 1. Instrumentation of a root canal by using files of the
same taper but with varying apical tip diameters.

2. Instrumentation

of root canal by varying or graduating tapers. These files have the constant apical tip size but their taper varies from (04 % to 12%).

Conclusion

Preparation of the root canal system is recognized as being one of the most important stages in root canal treatment.

The aim of the root canal instrumentation is to create a taper shape to allow effective irrigation to clean the root canal system.
It includes the removal of vital and necrotic tissues from the root canal system, along with infected root dentin. Numerous studies have shown the ability of several new rotary nickeltitanium systems with variety of taper to maintain original root canal curvature and to produce a well tapered root canal form sufficient for obturation.
