What is Up-cycling?
Creative reuse is the process of taking used or recycled materials and turning them into creative pieces of art, home decoration, or other useful items. It is popularly known as upcycling.

Upcycling is the process of converting old or

discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful.


When you upcycle an item, you arent breaking down the materials. You may be refashioning it like cutting a t-shirt into strips of yarn but its still made of the same materials as when you started. Also, the upcycled item is typically better or the same quality as the original.

Sustainability
Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This definition was created in 1987 at the World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission). It is enshrined in the Swiss federal constitution. It is similar to the "seventh generation" philosophy of the Native American Iroquois Confederacy, mandating that chiefs always consider the effects of their actions on their descendants seven generations in the future.

Upcycle

Upcycling was coined by William McDonaugh and Michael Braugart in their book on ecologically intelligent design, Cradle to Cradle. In the simplest terms, upcycling is the practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value. This process allows for the reduction of waste and virgin material use.

Eco-fashion
The eco-fashion movement started in the mid 70s as part of the hippie revolution was defined by opting out of mainstream and going for homemade, ethic and handcrafted fabric and clothes. They embraced fabric such as hemp and natural dyeing. The next wave of eco-fashion in the 1990s related to the dye houses and the standards and enviromental cost involved by such designers as Lynn Grose for Esprit and companies as Patagonia and J Crew.

Cutting waste out of fashion The EcoChic Design Award is a sustainable fashion design competition challenging emerging fashion designers to create mainstream clothing with minimal textile waste. The 2013 cycle is open to designers in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, UK, France, Belgium and Germany.

For the uninitiated, upcycling is a way of recycling textile waste, such as fabric swatches, production off-cuts, andend-of-roll leftovers, to create a product of higher quality. The undisputed queen of upcycling, From Somewhere designer Orsola de Castro recently meted out advice to a group of emerging Hong Kong designers at an EcoChic Design Academy seminar, part of theEcoChic Design Award organized by Redress to address Chinas mounting landfill problem. International Fashion Writer Suzy Menkes also talked about Upcycling everywhere.

Baseball Puffball Dress, made from 26 nylon baseball jackets. Sports uniforms were originally designed to be hi-tech long lasting uniforms, now they are non-biodegradable and are often discarded at the end of the season.

Denim Dress, made from 41 pairs of Levi 501's. Jeans were originally made to be a long lasting workmen's uniform, since becoming a fashion garment they are discarded long before their use is over.

Turns out the Envirosax bages can be transformed into a beautiful, colorful couture dress. Designer Amit Ayalon took on the challenge to use the eco-friendly bags to create a couture piece.

Designer Ryan Novelline created a unique fairy taleinspired gown made entirely from Golden Books. The skirt is made from 22,000-squareinches of pages recycled from our beloved Golden Books and the bodice is made from the spines of the books.

Future Prospects
Upcycling a new eco-friendly way of living Over 80% of the household waste including food scraps, clothes, paper, cardboards, cans and bottles either end up at landfill sites or simply adds to the clutter in the house. But, there are While over 80% of what most households throw away as waste or junk, including food scrap, clothes, paper, cardboard, cans and bottles can be re-used, recycled or composted, not much of it actually finds an alternative utilization in homes.
