What is an Entrepreneur?

Entrepreneur is a French word coined by the economist Jean-Baptiste Say. An Entrepreneur, rather than working as an employee, runs a small business
and assumes all the risk and reward of a given business venture, idea, or good or service offered for sale. The entrepreneur is commonly seen as a business leader and innovator of new ideas and business processes.

Difference between a businessman and an entrepreneur

Back in the day, everyone who owned a venture or inherited one was called a businessman, at least in India. A businessman usually starts a venture from an existing idea or concept and therefore becomes a market player. An entrepreneur on the other hand, thinks of a unique idea, spins it into a venture and aims to become a market leader, someone who seeks to change the rules of the game. Businessmen have one primary motive-a healthy bottom line, even in the early days. In short, they want short-term gains. An entrepreneur, however, begins his journey with a people and customer-oriented outlook. Businessman hire people to increase productivity. Entrepreneurs, create jobs.

At a yearly turnover of Rs 70 Lakhs and a work force of twenty people, Dutta has achieved the status of the most successful honey producer and bee keeper in the north-eastern province of the country. After two years of rigorous struggle, Dutta started his business with a mere Rs 10,000 and a set of 10 bee-hives about two decades back. He later registered his business under the CK Udyog that operates under the Small Scale Industry Department of Assam. Now Dutta runs his own processing unit that was initiated in 1994 with an investment of Rs 3 Lakhs from the Assam Finance Corporation Bank.
