Applications of CNT in Automobiles

The document discusses carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which are sheets of graphite rolled into cylindrical tubes. There are single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) and multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs). CNTs have excellent mechanical and electrical properties like high strength, flexibility, conductivity, and heat transmission. These properties make CNTs promising for applications in fields like automotive, aerospace, sensors, and biomedical devices. Specifically for automotive, CNTs could enable lighter vehicles through uses like composite materials, faster flywheels, better capacitors replacing batteries, stronger fuel tanks, and integrated sensor components.

MECH

a sheet of graphite rolled into a cylindrical form Constructed from hexagonal rings of carbon have one layer or multiple layers have caps at the ends making them look like pills Invented by Sumio Iijima, A Japanese scientist

CNT: Rolling-up a graphene sheet to form a tube

Schematic of a CNT

MWCNT
Consist of 2 or more layers of carbon Tend to form unordered clumps Consist of just one layer of carbon Greater tendency to align into ordered bundles Used to test theory of nanotube properties

SWCNT

Chirality - twist of the nanotube Described as the vector R (n, m) Armchair vector, R vector, angle =0, armchair nanotube 0< < 30, chiral nanotube > 30, zigzag nanotube

Diameter : SWCNT 0.6-1.8 nm; MWCNT 5-100 nm. Electrical : Metallic/semiconducting.

Possibility of Reducing the body weight with improved performance Enhancing the structural & sensing properties by infusing the body with CNT epoxy

This will add good electrical conductivity properties and allow the windscreen and windows to be connected to a heater and the car to de-ice easily and quickly.

Carbon nanotube carbon-carbon composites have already been developed for braking applications in aerospace industry. This ensure further weight loss with improved performance.

Faster flywheels CNTs could be used to make faster flywheels that store more energy without shattering . A flywheel is like a battery in that it stores energy. But unlike a battery, this energy is mechanical and stored via a wheel rotating at high speed (the faster the spin, the more energy it stores). Flywheels offer certain advantages over batteries. But a flywheel, if spun too fast, can shatter because of the strength limits of its material. While Flywheels have seen only limited use in amusement rides, race cars and backup power supplies, using CNTs could allow flywheels to become more prevalent in areas like public transportation and hybrid cars.

Better capacitors that replace batteries

CNT-Dielectric in capacitors more surface area more amount of charge Less time required for charging Can be used instantly in electric cars

Strength to weight ratio is higher for CNT So it can be used for making fuel tanks to store hydrogen

Italian motor giant Fiat has taken out a patent on the use of carbon nanotubes in motor vehicle components, to produce parts which have integrated sensor ability. The patent mentions fuel tanks, pipes, seats and bumpers as possible applications. Much of the mass of a vehicle is taken up with equipment and hence there is scope for carbon nanotubes to be used to achieve massive weight reduction.

CNT is used as one of the most promising nanotechnology materials with applications in automotive industry. CNT plays a pivotal role in weight reduction of the vehicle and thereby enhancing the fuel efficiency.
