India's overall balance of payments for the quarter ending March 2000 is summarized as follows: 1) The current account deficit was Rs. 4,673 crore due to a trade deficit of Rs. 25,037 crore that exceeded the surplus on invisibles of Rs. 20,364 crore. 2) The capital account surplus was Rs. 17,621 crore due to high levels of foreign investment inflows. 3) The overall balance of payments resulted in an increase of Rs. 13,296 crore in foreign exchange reserves.
