Thinking Out of The Box But Working Along
Thinking Out of The Box But Working Along
INTRODUCTION
Practicum is the single most powerful intervention in a teachers professional preparation. Turney et. al (1982:47)
The aim was to maximize the 12-week practicum to enhance the pedagogical knowledge and competence among the KPLI TESL trainee teachers and instil the passion of teaching English in primary school.
I still remembered during the second week of the practicum, Miss Mercy come to me almost in tears telling me that she was stressed and had no confidence in her own teaching as the pupils corrected her English in the class. Both of them expressed concern that they could not teach, no ideas how to plan activities and carry out the activities effectively in the class. RFCT/R/1

The trainee teachers gained tremendous confidence, improved in their pedagogical knowledge and became competence in teaching. They were passionate about their teaching and learning activities. Interesting teaching aids Pupils learnt how to fish instead of eating the fish I, as lecturer supervisor constantly reflected and tried to improve my supervision skills
The materials needed for this innovation are minimum and involved mainly stationery.
Cost
This innovation did not incur any cost on my part as the materials needed were either provided for by the institute or purchased by the trainee teachers themselves.
It did not incur any operation cost as this innovation was incorporated into the practicum.
Time Saving
The initial two supervisions took hours as I had to look through the lesson plans, guide them to prepare teaching aids, and macro-teach. However, the subsequent supervisions were shorter and lasted less than half an hour each. This innovation has proven to help save time in the long run in helping the trainee teachers to become autonomous effective teachers
Now Im not afraid to teach writing anymore. I even teach my other housemates how to do the marking. I give them more writing, cant wait to mark, bring home to mark, so interesting, a lot of ideas. ITW/TT1 If you want to know how to mark composition, you can come to me. PPR/TT1 At the end of my practicum,I felt more confident compare to the first day teaching..(u knew me..im always nervous =)..) the experience during practicum made me feel really enjoy teaching..and its totally change my view of teaching where b4 I thought is only deliver whatever in the text book. And practicum taught me how to make my lesson enjoyable-of course by using teaching aids =) love to do it till now. The lesson that I thnk most successful when I taught them about listening..do u still remember I ask them to draw an alien by listening to my instruction? I thnk they enjoyed it frm the beginning of the lesson till the end. SMS/TT2
They are really good. Not using BM (Malay language) to teach difficult words like scorching, glaring. ITW/TS When they first came in, they spoke softly in the class. Now they speak louder. I can say that this is a sign of gaining confidence. ITW/TS I like to write now. but I dont like to write in groups, I want to write my own. Other Benefits
This innovation is applicable on other options such as Science, Mathematics, Physical Education etc. I have developed a new approach in teaching. conduct a research on my own teaching which is currently underway
Miss Ros who is currently teaching in a remote school SK Merting, 45-minute drive away from Jerantut, Pahang. She proudly told me that she has helped to break the school record by producing 7 all As pupils in UPSR last year because they scored A in English which was always a problematic subject.
Conclusion
In my own small way, I did contribute and help to realise the fifth and fourth thrusts of the Education Development Master Plan.
The fifth thrust : Strengthening the Teaching Profession (Memartabatkan Profesion Keguruan). The fourth thrust : Bridging of the Education Gap (Merapatkan Jurang Pendidikan).
Thank you.
