Nano Materials IN Concrete: BY T Raj Kumar Reddy CE121535

The document discusses the use of nanomaterials in concrete. It defines nanotechnology and nanomaterials, including nano silica, carbon nanotubes, nano titanium dioxide, and nano aluminum oxide. Nano silica is described as highly amorphous with a large surface area and small particle size. When added to concrete, nanomaterials can increase properties like density, strength, and durability through size and pozzolanic effects. Experimental results showed nano silica concrete has higher strength and lower permeability. Carbon nanotubes are also discussed for their ability to improve mechanical properties and act as crack bridges in concrete. Future applications and challenges of nanomaterials in construction are mentioned.

DEFINITIONS
NANOTECHNOLOGY:

Nanotechnology is the art and science of manipulating matter at the nano scale.
It is the creation of materials and devices by controlling of matter at the levels of atoms, molecules, and supramolecular (nanoscale) structures.

CUORE CONCRETE
NS addition requires more water in order to keep the workability of mixtures constant BECAUSE it shows stronger tendency for adsorption of ionic species in aqueous medium and the formation of agglomerates. At higher conc. dispersing additive or PLASTICIZER is necessary to reduce the agglomeration and self-desiccation effects of nS and development of cracks in concrete due to autogenous shrinkage. Ns addition works as a nucleation site for precipitation of the C-S-H gel due to high surface area results in RAPID HYDRATION of cement. NS can improve the microstructure and reduce the water PERMEABILITY of hardened concrete. Ns addition overcomes the main problem of SEGREGATION in eco concrete ( i.e self compacting conc & high performance conc) by accelerating setting time.
Ns addition reduces calcium leaching rate of cement paste in 3 ways and increases durability.

CARBON NANO TUBES

o CNT are cylindrical in shape with nm in diameter and mm in length. o They have 5 times the youngs modulus and 8 times the strength of steel. o They can have one layer or wall (single walled nano tube) or more than one wall (multi walled nano tube). o Single layer nano-tube can be considered as the perfect thin walled cylinder because of the uniformity in thickness, accurate geometry and linear elastic material behavior. o The Production cost of nanotubes is high.

CNT IN CONCRETE
Agilent NanoIndenter can be used to test mechanical characteristics CNT arrays.(load vs displacement into the surface)

CNT remarkably improve mechanical durability by gluing concrete mixtures.

Prevents crack propagation. CNT/polycarbonate nanocomposite produces momentary changes in the electrical resistance when the device senses strain inputs, providing an early indication on the possible structural damage. Real time structural health monitoring capacity SWCNT act as nucleating agent for CSH and produces reinforcing behaviour.

CRACK BRIDGING

NANO TITANIUMDIOXIDE(TIO2)
Nano tio2 is a highly used white pigment. And is used as excellent reflective coating. Tio2 breaks down organic pollutants, volatile organic compounds & bacteria membrane through powerful photo catalytic reaction. Tio2 is hydrophilic in nature and it has self cleansing properties when applied onto surface.

NANO TIO2 IN CONCRETE

Nazari et al conducted the studies on the compressive-, split tensile- and flexural, strength, and workability and setting time of concrete by partial replacement of cement with nano-phase TiO2 particles The properties of nano-TiO2: Diameter of particles (nm ) SurfaceVolume ratio (m2/g) Purity Density percentage (g/cm3)

Mixture proportion of nano-TiO2 particles blended concretes:

Water to binder [cement + nano-TiO2] ratio of 0.40, sand 492 kg/m3, and aggregate 1148 kg/m3

Split Tensile strength of nano-TiO2 particle blended cement mortars

Flexural strength of nano-TiO2 particle blended cement mortars

use of 2.0% nano-TiO2 particles decreases the split tensile and flexural strength

This may be due to the fact that the quantity of nano-TiO2 particles (pozzolan) present in the mix is higher than the amount required to combine with the liberated lime during the process of hydration thus leading to excess silica leaching out and causing a deficiency in strength.

construction industry could benefit from nano-technology

Replacement of steel cables by much stronger carbon nanotubes in suspension bridges and cable-stayed bridges

Use of nano-silica, to produce dense cement composite materials

Incorporation of resistive carbon nanofibers in concrete roads in snowy areas Incorporation of nano-titania, to produce photocatalytic concrete Use of nano-clays in concrete to enhance its plasticity and flowability. Urban air quality could be improved by if the civil structures are treated with nano TiO2. Nanotechnology is applied to paints in order to assure the corrosion protection under insulation since it is hydrophobic and repels water from the metal pipe. Real time structural health monitoring.
