Computer Clothing: What Does It Comprises Of?

Wearable computers are computers that are built into articles of clothing to be worn constantly and seamlessly extend the capabilities of the body and mind. They can perform basic computer functions and make computers portable without strapping electronics to the body. Wearable computers are integrated into clothing or attached to the body via wristbands and are equipped with sensors to monitor health and act as personal safety devices. Computer clothing is made from silk organza thread that contains copper to conduct electricity and components like resistors and capacitors are sewn or soldered directly into the fabric.

Computer clothing

Wearable computer comprises of a computer built within an ordinary clothing. This transformation allows it to be worn constantly, with the goal of becoming a seamless extension of body and mind. These digital clothes will able to perform some of the PC functions. Computerized clothes make computers and devices portable without having to strap electronics into our body. Wearable computers are usually either integrated into the user's clothing or can be attached to the body through some other means, like a wristband. Equipped with various sensors which measure heart rate, respiration, footstep rate etc, the apparatus can function as a personal safety device for reducing crime, as well as personal health monitor for improving health care by encouraging individuals to take an active role in diagnosis and body maintenance. The wearable computer apparatus is embedded within nontransparent clothing which provides shielding. The apparatus provides the wearer with the ability to make its operation secure and completely private when desired.

WHAT DOES IT COMPRISES OF? The weave and thread of computer clothing is extremely important. For this purpose, there is a requirement of a thread that is able to carry the electrical currents. Now silk organza makes for an ideal thread for computer clothing as it comprises of two fibers that make it a good conductor of electricity. While the first fiber is ordinary silk, the second fiber comprises of a thin copper foil, thus imparting the properties of a conductor to the thread. Then again, even the fibers are rightly spaced, hence enabling individual addressing of each thread. It is believed that a single strip of this cloth would work like a ribbon cable (which is used in computers to connect disk drives to controllers). Once the fabric is ready and cut into the desirable shape, work to add other components like resistors, capacitors etc beings. While these are usually sewn into the fabric directly, other components like crystals, LEDs etc are soldered into the metallic thread.

Some important features of this jacket are: This jacket is made of silk organza and has an all-fabric keyboard as the controller. This keyboard is made a responsive to touch and is durable and flexible. There is a circuit printed in order to impart sensing ability to the keypad. The keypad senses the touch as the electrode experiences an increase in capacitance when touched. The keypads are connected to a miniature MIDI synthesizer that plays music. Power could be supplied by a parasitic power source such as solar power, wind, temperature or mechanical energy from turning wrists or walking.

OPERATIONAL MODES There are three operational modes in this new interaction between human and computer. Constancy : The computer runs continuously, and is always ready to interact with the user, thus provide a constant user interface. Augmentation: The assumption of wearable computing is that the user will be doing something else at the same time as doing the computing. Mediation: The wearable computer provides a greater degree of encapsulation than traditional portable computers. There are two aspects to this encapsulation such as solitude, privacy.

ATTRIBUTES There are six informational flow paths associated with this new human-machine synergy. Unmonopolizing of the users attention Unrestrictive to the user: Observable by the user. Controllable by the user. Attentive to the environment. Communicative to others. It must also be constant, personal, prosthetic, assertive, private.

Areas of application: Wearable computers are used in medical field to provide the on-spot state of patients health and also helps the doctor to provide better diagnosis to the patient. It can be used in military to check the physiological condition of the soldier. Sports and entertainment. Advantages: Can be used to recognize a person in a high alerted area such as an airport. Provide efficient results. Work from anywhere. A personal wearable facilitate the wearers needs. Makes the task more easier such as wearable computers can be used by surgeons, which allow data to be transferred to computer that saves time. Disadvantages: Equipment can be heavy. Expensive. Some wearable computers consists of lot of wiring. Can cause irritation in heat. Side effects such as head-ache.
