Exercise 3 Mass Transfer

The document details a mass transfer analysis for a distillation column designed to recover 90% of ethanol from an aqueous mixture. It includes calculations for molar composition of the distillate, feeding plate, and the number of theoretical and actual plates required based on given efficiencies and reflux ratios. The results indicate a need for 14 actual dishes to achieve the desired separation efficiency.

A distillation column is available to recover 90% of the ethanol.
content in an aqueous mixture, whose weight composition of the component
volatility is 40%. The food is introduced as a liquid-vapor mixture,
containing 50% liquid. When the column operates with a ratio of
50% reflux above the minimum, a residual stream is obtained with a
water content by weight of 90%. It is requested to determine:
a) Molar composition of the distillate.
b) Feeding plate.
c) Number of dishes needed if the overall efficiency of the column is 70%.

Solution:

The equilibrium diagram is obtained from the equilibrium data of the system.
ethanol water

It is taken as a basis F=100 kmol/h

Data:
Z F =0.281

X W=0.042

The amount of alcohol for the distillate stream will be:

DXD =09FZF………(1)

From the balance of matter and of global and component we have:

100= D+ W
( 100 x 0.281)=DXD +W ( 0.042 )

DXD =0.9 100

( ) ( 0.281 )

So we obtain the following results:

Since the food contains 50% liquid, it follows that q=0.5, therefore, the

As the operating reflux is 50% higher than the minimum, then:

Rop=1,365

The operating line for the enrichment zone will be:

Y +1= x n+
R+ 1 R+1
Y =0.577X+0.33
Graphically, it is obtained that the number of theoretical stages:

N T=10 ( 9+reboiler )

Now we find the number of actual plates:

10−1
N R=1+ =14 dishes
