Network Theory (Autumn 2025-26)

Tutorial-I 04/08/2025

1. In a certain inductive system, the current waveform shown in Fig. 1 exists. Find the
voltage that produces this current waveform and the associated charge, both as
functions of time. Assume that 𝐿 remains constant.

Fig. 1

2. The sketch of Fig. 2 shows two plates, one of which is driven by a constant-speed
motor so that the capacitance between the two plates varies according to the
equation:
𝐶(𝑡) = 𝐶 (1 − cos 𝜔𝑡)
If the battery potential remains constant at 𝑉 volts, find the current as a function of
time.

Fig. 2

3. The tuning capacitor that is located in radio receivers is represented in Fig. 3. The
plates are separated by air by a distance 𝑑; the movable plates and the fixed plates
are each connected together as shown by the figure. Neglecting fringing at the edges,
determine the maximum capacitance of the tuning capacitor.
Fig. 3

4. The voltage and charge of a nonlinear capacitor are related by the equation:
𝑆
𝑣(𝑞) = sinh (𝑎𝑞)
𝑎
where 𝑆 and 𝑎 are constants
(a) Sketch 𝑣 as a function of 𝑞.
(b) Compute the energy stored as a function of 𝑞.

5. A time-variable inductor changes with time as shown in Fig. 4 with 𝐶 replaced by 𝐿 in

henrys and 𝐶 replaced by 𝐿 . This inductor is connected to a current source of
constant value 𝐼 amperes. Determine 𝑣 (𝑡), the voltage across the inductor.

Fig. 4

6. In the circuit shown in Fig. 5, the capacitor is charged to a voltage of 1 V, and at 𝑡 = 0

the switch 𝐾 is closed. The current in the circuit is known to be of the form:
𝑖(𝑡) = 𝑒 amp, 𝑡 > 0
At a certain time, the current has a value of 0.37 amp.
(a) At what rate is the voltage across the capacitor changing?
(b) What is the value of the charge on the capacitor?
(c) What is the time rate of change of the product 𝐶𝑣?
(d) What is the voltage across the capacitor?
(e) How much energy is stored in the electric field of the capacitor?
(f) What is the voltage across the resistor?
(g) At what rate is energy being taken from the electric field of the capacitor?
(h) At what rate is energy being dissipated as heat?

7. The following set of problems refers to the elements and the waveforms shown in the
7-18.
accompanying figure. For each part of this problem, sketch the required quantity,
carefully making the time scale, significant amplitudes, slopes, and so on. Give
enough detail to permit the waveform to be constructed from the data alone.

19. The network of Fig. 7 is a model for a battery of open-circuit terminal voltage 𝑉 and
internal resistance 𝑅 . For this network, plot 𝑖 as a function 𝑣. Identify features of the
plot such as slopes, intercepts, and so on.

20. The piecewise linear characteristic shown as Fig. 8 represents a nonlinear inductor
with 𝑥 = 𝛹 and 𝑦 = 𝑖 . If the current in the inductor is given in Fig. 9, plot the
corresponding 𝑢 (𝑡).

23. Solve the following for 𝑡 ≥ 0:
