Part I. Introduction
English is often viewed as a complex language especially if it is not one’s
mother tongue. There are many reasons why the language is considered difficult, for
example, pronunciation may differ even though the spelling of words are similar –
“dough”, “tough”, “bough”; composing sentences should be carefully done to avoid
grammatical errors (Evans, 2017); also, one should expand his or her English
vocabulary because words may have another meaning in different contexts, or one
might use two different words that have the same meaning.
The English language can be studied as it is mostly taught in classes and is
considered a universal language. Aside from that, your vocabulary can also expand
when taking online English courses, and by reading a dictionary or thesaurus on your
own.
What is a dictionary? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a
DICTIONARY is a reference source (either printed/electronic) containing words in
alphabetical order and it includes the definition of the word, its pronunciation, and
other significant information.
What is a thesaurus? Based on the dictionary, a THESAURUS is a
dictionary containing the synonyms and antonyms of words.
● SYNONYMS are words that have the same meaning. For example:
scared – frightened center – middle
joy – happiness sick – unwell
● ANTONYMS are words that have the opposite meaning. For example:
happy – sad true – false
black – white on – off

There are words that are spelled and pronounced the same but they have different
meanings. These words with multiple meanings are called HOMONYMS.

Examples:
1. Address may mean:
A way of speaking to someone or Where a person lives or is located.
2. Duck may mean:
A type of bird or Lowering your head/body to avoid an approaching object.
3. Match may mean:
To compare with or A competitive event such as basketball match.
4. Wave may mean:
A movement in water or Waving one’s hand to say “Hello” or “Goodbye”.
