Activity 2: “POEM”

Did you enjoy the poem? Have you experience creating shadows of yourself?

3
What is It
The poem on the previous page talk about shadows. Do you know what shadows
are, and how shadows are formed?
Let’s find out by following the discussions below.

Lesson 9 Shadows and The Sun’s Position in The Sky

Before watches and clocks were invented, people depend on sunlight to tell
time. The sundial tells time depending on the position of the sun’s shadow during the
day. An object forms a shadow when it blocks light passing through it. You must have
noticed how, when you stand outdoors on a sunny day, your body forms a shadow either
beside you, behind you, or in front of you. This is because your body is positioned in such
a way that it blocks the sun’s light.
The direction in which your body forms a shadow depends on your position
in relation to the sun. You form a shadow in front of you if the sun is behind you and vice
versa. If the sun shines on you from your left, you form a shadow to your right and vice
versa. The change in direction of the sun’s light is not due to the sun spinning around you.
On the contrary, it is because the Earth is moving around the sun. Your shadow is long
in the morning as the sun appears in the east. At noon, the sun is directly above your
head and your shadows appears the shortest. It gets longer again when the sun sets in
the west. This time your shadow is on your other side. Look at the shadows of the tree in
the picture found below.

Lesson 10 Effects of The Sun to Human Activities

Plants may consume the most amount of sunlight, but it is obviously people
who have made the most of its power and have harnessed its energy for various uses.
Thus, it can be said that people have had the most experiences on both the positive and
negative effects of sunlight.
As it does for other living things, the sun provides people with the light that
makes day distinct from night. In recent years, people have successfully harnessed solar
energy to generate artificial lighting and heating for their homes, workplaces, and other
places. Structures called solar panels are set up on the rooftops of buildings and these
trap the sun’s rays. The panels process the energy to generate electrical power.

Sunlight likewise helps people grow plants for food and other purposes. It
is also a welcome sight for people who flock to beaches for some time to relax and soak
in the sun.
Sunlight also provides the Vitamin D that people need for good health.
Vitamin D enables the human body to have the proper levels of calcium and phosphorus
that make their bones healthy. A special substance in the human body reacts with the
sun’s ultraviolet rays and converts the energy from the rays into Vitamin D.
Too much exposure to the sun’s heat without the proper protection may also
cause sunburn, or extreme redness and irritation of the skin brought about by damage
to the skin cells. Sunburn is characterized by small painful skin blisters that peel off after
a couple of days after exposure. Many children get sunburn after playing under the sun
for a long time.
Prolonged exposure to the sun can also damage the tissues of the eyes
and cause such conditions as snow blindness and cataracts. Snow blindness is the term

5
for a temporary condition in which the eyes feel like they sting all the time, while cataract
is a form of eye damage that leads to blindness.

Protection from the Harmful Effect of the Sun

Most health problems caused by too much exposure to sunlight clear up
after the right treatment and proper care. However, some conditions like skin cancer and
cataracts are life threatening. To avoid these complications later in life, you can start
observing the following practices when you have to stay under the sun for some time.
1. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and use an umbrella to provide some
shade. If you are not wearing sunglasses, never look at the sun directly as this cause
permanent damage to your vision.
2. Apply sunscreen to protect your skin. Skin doctors recommend the use of
sunscreen with at least SPF 15. SPF is the acronym for sun protection factor, a rating
system devised to guide you in choosing the right sunscreen. A sunscreen with at least
SPF 30 rating offers maximum protection as it blocks out about 96 percent of UV rays.
3. Choose the right clothing to wear. As much as possible, wear light colored and
lightweight clothes because these do not absorb too much heat from the sun. They also
let your skin breathe more easily. If you can, wear shirts with long sleeves and protection
for the neck.
4. Drink lots of water throughout a hot day to replenish whatever fluids you may
lose from sweating. Loss of fluids can lead to dehydration.
5. Avoid staying outdoors during the midday, or from ten o’clock in the morning
(10:00 am) to four o’clock in the afternoon (4:00 pm), as this is the time when UV rays are
at their most intense.

What’s More
Activity 3: “Let’s Do It!”
Objective: Describe the position of your own shadow.
Directions: Describe the position of the shadow that you would form if you were outdoors
with the sun’s position as described below. Write your descriptions on the lines.

1. The sun behind you. __________________________________________

2. The sun in front of you. ________________________________________

3. The sun to your right. _________________________________________
4. The sun to your left. __________________________________________
5. The sun high in the sky above you. ______________________________
