When I was a boy, children always objected to wearing school uniform, but teachers were keen
on it because they said all of us looked like. Otherwise, they said, children would compete with one
another, and the poor children would be very unhappy because people would see straight away how
poor they were. In recently years, however, many schools have given up the idea of making children
wearing uniform, but, funnily enough, now that children can wear ing what they like, they have
adopted an uniform of their own. When some journalists visited a London school, they found that all
the boys and girls were dressed in jeans because no one want to look different from the other students
in the class. Parents may not be happy about this as children, but they ought to be because this new
kind of uniform is one that the children like, not something they have been forced to wear.

NEW HUNT FOR LIFE IN SPACE
British space scientists are planning to join the American in the race to find evidence of life on
(61) ________ planets. Alan Penny and his team at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory have designed
a telescope that is 40 times more powerful than Hubble. Known as ‘Darwin,’ his telescope could tell if
planets 50 (62) ________ years away have any kind of life on them. Two days (63) ________, NASA
scientists had shown a proof that one of Jupiter’s moons could support life. Penny announced that his
telescope may be included in a European Space Agency mission. The Darwin project, with a (64)
________ of 500 million, is on a short list of two proposals. If approved it will probably be (65)
________ around 2015, its destination somewhere between Mars and Jupiter. The blueprint is actually
for five telescopes positioned 15 meters apart in space, working as a (66) ________ processing station.
The combined data from these telescopes would build up a full picture of a planet, picking out faint
images that have never been seen before. Darwin would not be able to take detailed photographs of the
planets it (67) ________, but Penny believes a second-generation telescope can be set up to do this. He
claims it is worthwhile mapping the universe around our (68) ________ galaxy, even though these
planets lie (69) ________ our reach for the moment. The European Space Agency will make its
decision (70) ________ Darwin within three years.

Question III. Read the passage and choose the best answers to questions below. Write the
answers on your answer sheet. (10 pts)
The atmosphere that originally surrounded Earth was probably much different from the air we
breathe today. Earth's first atmosphere (some 4.6 billion years ago) was most likely hydrogen and
helium. The two most abundant gasses found in the universe - as well as hydrogen compounds, such as
methane and ammonia. Most scientists feel that this early atmosphere escaped into space from the
Earth's hot surface.
A second, more dense atmosphere, however, gradually enveloped Earth as gases from molten
rocks within its hot interior escaped through volcanoes and steam vents. We assume that volcanoes
spewed out the same gases then as they do today: mostly water vapor (about 80 percent), carbon
dioxide (about ten percent), and up to a few percent nitrogen. These same gases probably created
Earth’s second atmosphere.
As millions of years passed, the constant outpouring of gases from the hot interior—known as
outgassing—provided a rich supply of water vapor, which formed into clouds. Rain fell upon Earth for
many thousands of years, forming the rivers, lakes, and oceans of the world. During this time, large
amounts of carbon dioxide were dissolved in the oceans. Through chemical and biological processes,
much of the carbon dioxide became locked up in carbon sedimentary rocks, such as limestone. With
much of the water vapor already condensed into water and the concentration of carbon dioxide
dwindling, the atmosphere gradually became rich in nitrogen.
It appears that oxygen, the second most abundant gas in today’s atmosphere, probably began an
extremely slow increase in concentration as energetic rays from the sun split water vapor into
hydrogen and oxygen during a process called photodissociation. The hydrogen, being lighter, probably
rose and escaped into space, while the oxygen remained in the atmosphere.
This slow increase in oxygen may have provided enough of this gas for primitive plants to
evolve, perhaps two to three billion years ago. Or the plants may have evolved in an almost oxygen-
free (anaerobic) environment. At any rate, plant growth greatly enriched our atmosphere with oxygen.
The reason for this enrichment is that plants, in the presence of sunlight, process carbon dioxide and
water to produce oxygen.
71. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The original atmosphere on Earth was unstable.
B. The atmosphere on Earth has changed over time.
C. Hot underground gases created clouds, which formed the Earth’s atmosphere.
D. Plant growth depended on oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere.

B. the formation of bodies of water
C. decreases in the level of nitrogen
D. the formation of clouds
75. The word “gradually” in line 17 is closest in meaning to...
A. accidentally B. quickly C. in the end D. by degrees

B. it was heavier than hydrogen

80. Which of the following does the passage mention as necessary for both the production of oxygen
by photodissociation and the production of oxygen by plants?
