Assignment Guidelines:

Comprehensive Study of an Infectious Disease: Definition, Risk Factors, and

Epidemiology

Step 1: Disease Selection

 Each student selects a specific infectious disease (e.g., Tuberculosis, Malaria,

COVID-19, Dengue, HIV/AIDS).
 Encourage diversity of topics across the class.

Step 2: Introduction and Definition (2-3 pages)

 Provide a clear, scientific definition of the disease.

 Include the causative agent (virus, bacteria, parasite, fungus).
 Brief history and significance of the disease globally.
 Add info from reliable sources or published articles to support facts.

Step 3: Risk Factors (3-4 pages)

 Identify and explain biological, environmental, social, and behavioral risk factors.
 Discuss genetic predisposition, occupation, lifestyle, geography, and
socioeconomic status where relevant.
 Include recent studies as evidence.

Step 4: Global Epidemiology (1-2 pages)

 Describe the worldwide prevalence and incidence.

 Discuss major affected regions, populations at risk, mortality/morbidity rates.
 Use charts, maps, or graphs from WHO or CDC data.
 Include trends over time, such as increasing/decreasing cases.

Step 5: Local Epidemiology (1-2 pages)

 Focus on the student’s country or region.

 Describe local statistics, outbreak history, and control measures in place.
 Analyze how local factors influence disease spread and management.
 Add data from national health reports or research articles.
Step 6: Transmission and Pathogenesis (2-3 pages)

 Explain how the disease spreads.

 Describe the biological mechanism of infection and progression in the human body.
 Use diagrams or flowcharts for clarity.

Step 7: Prevention and Control (2-3 pages)

 Summarize current prevention strategies (vaccines, vector control, sanitation).

 Discuss treatment protocols and challenges like drug resistance.
 Mention any ongoing research or new interventions.

Step 8: Public Health Impact and Challenges (2-3 pages)

 Discuss the social and economic impact of the disease locally and globally.
 Identify barriers to control, such as healthcare access, misinformation, or climate
change.
 Propose recommendations for better control.

Step 9: Conclusion (few paragraphs)

 Summarize key findings.

 Reflect on the importance of continued research and surveillance.

Step 10: References and Appendices

 Cite all sources, preferably peer-reviewed articles, WHO/CDC reports, and

reputable journals.
 Include additional data tables, questionnaires, or images if applicable.

Additional Tips to Reach 20 Pages

 Incorporate figures, tables, and maps to visualize data.

 Use case studies or recent outbreaks as examples.
 Compare disease burden between regions or populations.
 Critically analyze controversies or gaps in research.

Evaluation Criteria (for 35 marks)

 Clarity and accuracy of disease definition (5 marks)

 Depth of risk factor analysis (5 marks)
 Quality and detail of global and local epidemiology (8 marks)
 Explanation of transmission and pathogenesis (4 marks)
 Discussion on prevention and control (5 marks)
 Critical analysis of public health impact (4 marks)
 Presentation, structure, and referencing (4 marks)
