Authentication App Notes

An authentication app enhances online account security by providing a second layer of protection through two-factor authentication (2FA) or multi-factor authentication (MFA). It generates time-sensitive codes that users must enter after their username and password, making it difficult for unauthorized individuals to access accounts even if they have the password. Popular examples include Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy, which offer stronger security than SMS codes and function without mobile data.

What is an Authentication App?

An authentication app is a mobile or desktop application that helps protect your online
accounts by providing a second layer of security. This is called two-factor authentication
(2FA) or multi-factor authentication (MFA).

---

How Does It Work?

1. You log in with your username and password (this is the first step).

2. The website or service then asks for a code from your authentication app.

3. You open the app, find the code, and enter it on the site.

4. ✅ You're logged in safely.

---
📱 Examples of Authentication Apps

Google Authenticator

Microsoft Authenticator

Authy

Duo Mobile

LastPass Authenticator

---

⏳ One-Time Passwords (OTP)

These apps generate 6-digit codes that change every 30 seconds. Even if someone knows
your password, they can’t log in without this second code.

---

🔄 How to Use an Authentication App

1. Install an app like Google Authenticator from Play Store or App Store.

2. Go to the settings of the website you want to protect (e.g., Gmail, Facebook).

3. Find the 2FA or Security section and choose to use an authenticator app.

4. Scan the QR code with the app.

5. The app starts showing codes for that account.

6. Enter the code shown in the app when asked.
