2025 Year 8 Pathway 1 Program
2025 Year 8 Pathway 1 Program
This pathway will be following a course based on the Australian National Curriculum Year 8.
Equipment
Students will require the usual stationery items, a protractor, a set square (recommended),
compasses and a Scientific Calculator. It is recommended that students have two separate
notebooks for Mathematics, one for note-taking and one for their work. It is also recommended
that they have either a ring binder or folio (which can be kept at home) to keep any hand-outs they
are given in good order.
Text Book
The course will follow the text Essential Mathematics for the Australian Curriculum Year 8, by
Greenwood, Humberstone et al, published by Cambridge University Press, 2011.
While it is not required it is recommended that students purchase their own copy of this textbook
as doing so will allow them to complete classwork at home as well as providing ample material for
revision. While the book is expensive, it is only about the cost of 1 hour’s private tuition,
considerably less than a holiday practice course and in the opinion of the teachers represents
extremely good value for those looking to do well at this course. There are two editions of this book
and either is fine.
It is available online in both digital and book form from www.cambridge.edu.au, as well as from
various textbook stores.
Homework
Year 8 students should be completing at least 2 hours per week of maths homework, either in the
form of homework assignments, revision or re-writing and organising classroom notes. For students
who intend to eventually attempt ATAR (university entrance) mathematics courses in senior school,
considerably more homework time will need to be spent.
Regular marked homework assignments will be given which will count towards the students’ grade.
The graded homework assignments will be given out as the class nears the end of each chapter of
the text. In addition to forming part of the student’s final grade, these will also comprise part of the
revision for each test. The graded homework will be scored on the level of effort shown. The aim is
to ensure that students have learned all of the concepts in the course and are ready to sit the next
test.
Assessment
The timing of assessments may change depending on the speed at which we work through the
course. The following assessments are planned:-
9 tests – The tests will follow the completion of the relevant section or sections of the text
book.
2 investigations – Investigations are more open ended than tests and give students an
opportunity to show their ability to solve complex problems. The topics of the 3
investigations will be announced shortly before each assessment.
Homework – There will be a mark awarded each semester for homework. The homework
mark will be based on the level of effort shown. Incorrect homework may still receive full
marks as long as a) the student made a good effort to solve the problem, and b) that they
identified their mistakes when later provided the answers and c) they then complete the
question correctly and resubmit their work. In this way students will be able to use their
homework to identify weaknesses to be corrected through further revision before sitting
their tests.
