NFPA 701-Fire tests for flame propagation of textiles and films

NFPA 701—Standard methods of fire tests for flame propagation of textiles and films.

Testing methods: according to product weight and the surface coating.

NFPA 701 Method 1：

Scope：
(1) Table Skirts
(2) Table Linens
(3) Display booth separators
(4) Textile wall hangings
Not apply to the specimens having an area density greater than 700g/m 2
Not apply to the Vinyl-coated fabric.

Specimen: 400mm*150mm *10pcs

The specimen is vertically hanged. The specified gas flame shall be applied to the center
of the lower edge of the specimen for 45 seconds.

Criteria:
(1) The fragments and residues that fall to the floor of the test chamber shall not continue
to burn for more than an average of 2 seconds.
(2) The average weight loss of the 10 specimens in a sample shall be 40 percent or less.

NFPA 701 Method 2:

Apply to the specimens having an area density greater than 700g/m 2
Apply to the Vinyl-coated fabric.
Apply to the plastic films.

Fail Criteria:
(1) When any specimen continues flaming for more than 2 seconds after the test flame is
removed from contact with the specimen, the material shall be recorded as having failed
the test.
(2) When the length of char of any individual folded specimen exceeds 1050 mm, the
material shall be recorded as having failed the test.
(3) When the char length of any single flat specimen exceeds 435mm, the material shall be
recorded as having failed the test.
(4) The fragments and residues that fall to the floor of the test chamber shall not continue
to burn for more than 2 seconds.

1. Fragments or residues of specimens that fall to the floor of the test chamber shall not continue to burn for
more than an average of 2 seconds per specimen for the sample of 10 specimens.
2. The average weight loss of the 10 specimens in a sample shall be 40 percent or less.

3. No individual specimen’s percent mass loss shall deviate more than 3 standard deviations from the mean
for the 10 specimens.
4. When a retest is required, no individual specimen’s percent mass loss in the second set of specimens shall
deviate from the mean value by more than 3 standard deviations calculated for the second set.
5. When a sample does not demonstrate passing performance in accordance with all of the conditions
indicated above, the material shall be recorded as having failed Test Method 1.

Conclusion: The tested sample “As received” meets the requirements of Test Method 1 of NFPA 701:2015.

Statement：The test results relate to the behaviour of the test specimens of a product under the particular
conditions of the test; they are not intended to the sole criterion for assessing the potential smoke and toxicity
hazard of the product in use. Test results are just for internal reference.
