Grade 9 SPA – Visual Arts

Curriculum Overview

Focus: Developing higher-level art skills, critical and creative thinking, and cultural appreciation through
Filipino art forms and contemporary practices.

📚 1st Quarter: Drawing and Composition Development


Theme: Personal and Cultural Identity through Drawing

Lessons:

1. Review of Elements and Principles of Art


2. Advanced Drawing Techniques
o Value shading, hatching, stippling
3. Perspective Drawing (1-point & 2-point)
4. Figure Drawing and Proportions
o Study of human body and gestures
5. Still Life and Object Drawing
6. Composition Techniques
o Focal point, rule of thirds, balance
7. Cultural Motif Drawing
o Integrating okir, ukit, tattoo patterns from Filipino indigenous designs

Performance Task:

 Personal Cultural Poster using accurate perspective and Filipino patterns

📚 2nd Quarter: Painting and Color Theory


Theme: Telling Stories through Colors and Traditions

Lessons:

1. Color Theory:
o Color wheel, harmony, warm/cool, contrast
2. Filipino Symbolism in Color
o E.g., red for bravery, gold for royalty (from festivals, clothing, etc.)
3. Painting Media and Techniques
o Watercolor, acrylic, mixed media
4. Underpainting and Layering
5. Landscape Painting
o Based on local sceneries or festivals
6. Portrait Painting
o With cultural attire or expression

 Festival-Inspired Painting (e.g., Sinulog, Kadayawan, Panagbenga)

Performance Task:

 Advocacy Poster through Printmaking or Mixed Media Collage

o Relief, in-the-round, kinetic

o Papier-mâché, wire, clay, assemblage

o Higantes, bulul, okir wood carvings
5. Installation Art
o Site-specific, environmental, interactive
6. Contemporary Filipino Artists and Their Works

Performance Task:

 Mini Installation or Sculpture Project with Filipino theme (e.g., “Bayanihan,” “Fiesta,” or
“Kalikasan”)
