Consequences
The French Revolution (1789–1799) was a period of radical social and political
upheaval in France that had a major impact on France and the world.

**Causes:**
- Economic crisis due to debt and poor harvests.
- Inequality among the three estates (clergy, nobility, and commoners).
- Enlightenment ideas that challenged traditional authority.
- Absolutism of the monarchy under Louis XVI.

**Major Events:**
- The storming of the Bastille (1789) symbolized the uprising against the monarchy.
- The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was adopted, promoting
liberty and equality.
- The Reign of Terror (1793–1794), led by Robespierre, where thousands were
executed by guillotine.

**Consequences:**
- Abolition of the monarchy and establishment of a republic.
- Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.
- Spread of revolutionary ideas across Europe.

The French Revolution set the stage for modern democracies by challenging feudal
privileges and emphasizing the rights of individuals.
