The document discusses the interdisciplinary management of patients with airway issues, focusing on identifying skeletal patterns associated with sleep and breathing disorders in both children and adults. It evaluates specific conditions such as underbite, overbite, and vertical maxillary excess, and explores strategies for rehabilitation and growth guidance. The session will include case examples and small group discussions to facilitate understanding and application of these concepts.

Interdisciplinary Management of Patients with Airway Issues

Dr. Rebecca Bockow

• What does an airway patient look like in a restorative practice?

• Are there certain skeletal patterns associated with sleep and breathing disorders that
one can identify?

• We will critically evaluate the following skeletal patterns in both children and adults:
o Underbite – a deficient upper jaw
o Overbite – a deficient lower jaw
o Vertical maxillary excess and mandibular retrognathia – both jaws are small and
positioned backwards relative to the skeletal base

• How does an interdisciplinary team manage the timing and sequencing of rehabilitating
these complex adult patients?

• What strategies can we use in growing children to guide growth?

• What appliances can we use and does the age of the patient matter?

We will address all of these issues with case examples and allot time for small group
discussions.
