Sample Question Paper with Answers
Subject: Science – Biology
Class: 9
Chapter: The Fundamental Unit of Life
Total Marks: 20
Time: 45 minutes
General Instructions:
- All questions are compulsory.
- Write neat and labelled diagrams where necessary.
- Marks are indicated against each question.
Section A: Very Short Answer Questions (1 mark each)
(Answer in one sentence) [1 × 4 = 4 marks]
1. 1. Who discovered the cell and how?
Answer: The cell was discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665 by examining a cork cell under a
self designed primitive microscope.
2. 2. Name the organelle known as the ‘powerhouse of the cell’.
Answer: Mitochondria.
3. 3. What is plasmolysis in plant cells?
Answer: Plasmolysis is the shrinkage of the cytoplasm from the cell wall due to water loss
by osmosis.
4. 4. What is the function of the nucleolus?
Answer: The nucleolus helps in the synthesis of ribosomes.
Section B: Short Answer Questions (2 marks each)
(Answer in 30–40 words) [2 × 4 = 8 marks]
5. 5. Differentiate between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells (any two points).
Answer: Prokaryotic cells lack a defined nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
Eukaryotic cells have a well-defined nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
6. 6. What would happen if the plasma membrane ruptures or breaks down?
Answer: If the plasma membrane ruptures, the cell contents will leak out, leading to cell
death.
7. 7. Why are lysosomes known as suicide bags of the cell?
Answer: Lysosomes contain digestive enzymes that can break down cell components. If they
burst, they can digest the entire cell, hence called suicide bags.
8. 8. Describe the structure and function of the Golgi apparatus.
Answer: The Golgi apparatus consists of a stack of membrane-bound sacs. It modifies, sorts,
and packages proteins and lipids for storage or transport.
Section C: Long Answer Questions (4 marks each)
(Answer in 60–80 words) [4 × 2 = 8 marks]
9. 9. a) Explain the structure of the plasma membrane.
b) How does diffusion differ from osmosis?
Answer: a) The plasma membrane is a semi-permeable membrane made of a phospholipid
bilayer with embedded proteins. It controls the entry and exit of substances.
b) Diffusion is the movement of particles from high to low concentration. Osmosis is the
diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane.
10. 10. a) Draw a well-labelled diagram of a plant cell.
b) Mention any two differences between plant and animal cells.
Answer: a) (Diagram to be drawn by student showing cell wall, nucleus, chloroplasts, etc.)
b) Plant cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts; animal cells do not. Plant cells have a large
vacuole; animal cells have small or no vacuoles.
