 Learning outcomes:
 To make the students able to read and recite the poem with appropriate pause,
intonation and pronunciation.
 To make them able to understand, interpret and appreciate the poetry.
 To make them able to learn different words and phrases and their usage.
 To make them able to learn about the loss of something they love and not to
grieve over the loss.
 To make them able to understand difficult situation in life and to cope with the
problems of life.

 Key vocabulary:
 Merrily bouncing : happily moving
 Grief: sorrow
 there are other balls : The word suggests that the loss is not important enough
to worry about
 Ultimate shaking grief : extreme sadness which greatly affects the boy.
 Rigid: stiff
 Trembling: shaking or quivering
 Staring down: to look at someone/ something in a particular way.

 Dime: ten cents (U.S)

 Teacher’s Activity:
 The teacher introduces the poem(The Ball Poem) and the poet (John
Berryman).
 He/ She reads the poem with correct pronunciation, pause, rhythm and
intonation and asks the students to read the same.
 He/ She does the word drill of the glossary and asks the students to write it.
 He/ She narrates the summary of the poem.
 He/ She explains the poem line by line keeping following points to connect it
to the topic.
The little boy has lost his ball- can buy new one but emotionally attached
with the older one- extremely affected by the loss and griefs over the loss-
its time to learn his responsibilities and overcome his grief- learns toughest
lesson of his life.

 He/ She asks the students to find out rhyming words and poetic devices used
in the poem and later discusses it in the class.
 He/ She asks the students the questions based on the poem.
 He/ She discusses the theme and HOTS with the students.
 He/ She recapitulates the poem.
 Students’ Activity:
 The students will listen to the teacher carefully and note down the important
points.
 They will read the poem with correct pronunciation, pause, rhythm and
intonation.
 They will do the word drill and write the meaning of difficult words of the
poem.
 They will listen the summary and explanation of the poem.
 They will find out rhyming words and poetic devices from the poem.
 They will discuss the questions asked in the class and write it in their
notebooks.

 What has the boy lost?
 What was the reaction of the boy at the loss of the ball?
 Where does the ball go?
 Why does the poet not interfere?
 What lesson will be learnt after the loss of the ball?
