Media and Information Literacy
Quarter 4 – Lesson 4:
Describing
the Different
Dimensions
of Media and
Information
The term media was first used to
describe newspapers more than
two centuries ago. Today, media
has many different connotations.
For instance, there are mass
media, print media, visual
media and social media.
While media can take on many
different forms, the purpose of
all media is universally the same
-- media is a channel of
communication.
Media complements instructor-led learning by encouraging
students to listen to music, read print materials, or watch a
documentary or movie clip.
The primary
advantage of this approach
is that the instructor takes on
the role of a facilitator who
helps students interpret what
they are listening to, reading
or seeing.
Media can also be student-
generated. This approach
utilizes asking the student to
step into the role of the
teacher and create content
that will engage learners and
help them to master
concepts.
Lastly, social media can also be used to enhance teaching
and learning and it includes varied online technology tools
that allow people to communicate easily via the internet to
share information and resources.
Now that different modalities are
used whether modular, distant or
online learning.
You are encouraged to practice
independent study.
How do you maximize social
media to learn?

Information
Text - a piece of written or
printed material regarded as
conveying the authentic or
primary form of a particular
work
Writing system - a set of
symbols and rules used to
write a particular language
1. Text Media
● Publications that disseminate information.
COMMON TYPES OF TEXT
● Plain Text - these are essentially fixed-sized
character with the same style.
● Formatted text - text appearance varies using
various typefaces, colors, and font sizes.
● Hypertext - this highlights and links certain
words in electronic documents that will redirect
you to browse another webpage or another
document.
Typeface
is a digital
representation
of text which
is more
commonly
known as
font type or
font face.

2. Visual Media
● Sources of data or information in the form of visual
representation may be abstractions, analogues, rough
illustrations or digital reproductions of objects requiring the
interpretation of the data sources.
● May be hosted on the Internet,
printed in publications, displayed through
broadcast media, or otherwise
disseminated generally available or citable
as stable or traceable future references
is information in the form of
visual representations.
Visual media in marketing uses visually
appealing graphics and designs to promote a
business or company.
It includes not just graphics but also videos
and photos.
Creating Visual Information and Visual
Media refers to all possible media
technologies to reach a large number of
audience.
Examples of Visual Media are videos,
photography, infographics, comic strips,
memes, screenshots, data visualization, and
visual note-taking.
is the source of data or information
represented visually. It also refers to
the artistic or creative interpretation
or representation of a concept, idea,
or emotion using the different types
of media.
Visual information is created by the following:
1. Painter - a
person who produces
a work of art using
lines, shapes, and
colors. Paint is used
as medium. Painters
are considered as
artists because their
field of work is
artistic in nature.
2. Graphic
Artist or
Designer - This
visual artist sets illustrations,
charts, images, and tables on
drafts. They also use
electronic media for artworks
and designs. Professional
graphic artists can also create
and layout brochures,
pamphlets, and other
advertising materials.
3. Photographer
- The primary job of
photographers is to capture
images using a camera.
They can be classified as
amateur or professional.
They use themes to take the
best shot of their subject.
4. Sculptor –
A sculptor
creates a
masterpiece using
clay, wood, marble,
or even ice.
Dimensions
- is the
creation of aesthetic
qualities in a two-
dimensional visual
language to express
ideas and emotions. It
uses flat medium such as
canvas boards and
painting materials.
Examples of paintings are:
a. Portrait - uses human as subject of a work of art.
b. Landscape - depicts an outdoor scenario.
Painters use nature as theme for landscapes.
c. Still Life - is the depiction of inanimate
objects with qualities such as form, color,
texture, and composition.
The term “still life” describes a work of art that shows
inanimate objects from the natural or man-made world, such as
fruit, flowers, dead game, and/or vessels like baskets or bowls.
Looked at another way: still lifes depict things that are “still”
and don't move.
d. Icon - refers to paintings which
proliferated during the Byzantine Empire. It
uses religious entities as its subject.
Icon painting, also called isography, is a kind of Christian
church painting intended to create sacred images — icons.
Such works replaced the written word with colours, just like
Gothic cathedrals turned the scholasticism and secrets of
alchemy into a visual language.
- this is a visual representation taken using
a camera. It tells a story which lets people feel emotions by mere perception. It is
also used to record past events. It comes in many types, which are:
a. Personal Photo i. Travel Photo
b. Family Photo j. Underwater Photo
c. Photojournalism k. Religious Photo
d. Yearbook or graduation photo l. Perspective Photo
e. Landscape Photo m. Panoramic Photo
f. Nature and Wildlife Photo n. Digital Infrared Photo
g. Fashion or Beauty Photo o. Time-lapse Photo
h. Wedding Photo p. Macro photo
- it is a three-dimensional work
of art which uses metal, clay, wood, or ice as
medium. It depicts a replica of a subject, human,
nature, or inanimate object.
4. - sequential
arrangement which shows illustrations or drawings.
It is usually seen in newspapers or official comic
books.
- A graph is a
diagrammatic representation of a given set of data.
It shows variables or numerical figures indicating a
trend or phenomenon.
-
A Billboard refers to a large outdoor board which contains text
information and images with designs used as a form of an
advertisement. A Poster is a smaller version of a billboard.
● Visual information is a very powerful
tool in influencing people, so use it
wisely.
● Spreading false information may result
to confusion. Always look for credible
sources before claiming something as
factual.
3. Audio Media
● Media communication that uses
audio or recordings to deliver and
transfer information through the
means of sound.
● May refer to audio formats may refer
to analog tape cassettes and digital
cd's, computer files containing audio,
in any number of digital formats
● One should
listen before
speaking to avoid
miscommunication
That is the reason
why man has two
ears and one
mouth.
● Audio media and information is used for information
(broadcasters share live news update), education (teachers use
audio-visual materials in the classroom), communication (a call
center agent talks to a client via phone call), among others.
● We must assess what is heard
before making conclusions to avoid
hasty generalization and quick
judgment.
● Audio media and information
appeals to more retention of
information than using
visual elements only.

4. Motion Media
● A form of media that has the
appearance of moving text and
graphics on a display its
purpose is to communicate
information in multiple ways
(Roblyer, 2006).
● An integrated sight-and-
sound kinetic media (Shelton,
2004)
Motion media refers to media that makes use of moving
visuals, usually constructed using frames that are arranged to give the
appearance of movement. The visual component of motion media is
usually paired with an audio component.
● Motion media usually has a heterogeneous
audience whose members are reached
simultaneously, and an impersonal and transitory
message.
● Motion media may be produced formally or
informally. Production typically follows a process --
scripting, storyboarding, shooting/acquiring visual
content and audio content, editing, and
distribution with approval.
● Not all motion media and information produced can be
said to be reliable. There are criteria that must be
followed to evaluate motion media for reliability.
● Producing effective motion media relies on following
basic design principles covering kinetic typography use,
composition, direction and angles, editing, and rhythm
and pacing.
5. Manipulatives Media
● Items or tools used to aid in hands-on learning models
in which learners can manipulate to gain understanding
and/or mastery of a concept.
● Tools to assist students to
Advance from concrete novice
knowledge to a more expert
understanding of abstract ideas
through visual and kinesthetic
senses.
6. Multimedia
● Media and content that use a
combination of different formats.
● A wise mix of various mass media such as print,
audio and video the development of computer-
based hardware and software packages produced
on a mass scale and yet allow individualized use
and learning simply means "more than one
medium".
● Production of multimedia requires
careful planning so less problems may
occur after production. Likewise, it is best
to satisfy target audiences with an
efficient and reliable multimedia product.
● Multimedia is used for education,
entertainment, and information purposes.
What are the strengths and
weaknesses of the media format?
Each media format has
inherent strengths and weaknesses. Social media
messages, for example, are quick and efficient but
prone to inaccuracies. In general, newspapers
provide depth and accuracy but lack the sensory
appeal of television, the interactive feature of a
blog, and the rapid delivery of radio.
According to
the graphic,
what does it
say about the
relationship of
media delivery
and its
reliability?
