Meaning of Social Work
Basically, social work practice is an art with scientific and value foundation. Even social work
professional come into being and continues to develop because it meets human needs and
aspiration recognized by society. Well, social work practice takes its values from those held by
the society of which it is a part. However, its values are not necessary or altogether those
universally or predominantly held or practiced in society.
The scientific base of social work consists of three types of knowledge: a) Tasted Knowledge b)
Hypothetical Knowledge that requires transformation into tasted knowledge, and c) Assumptive
Knowledge or wisdom that requires transformation into hypothetical knowledge and thence into
tasted knowledge. The knowledge needed for social work practice is determined by its goals and
functions and the problem it seeks to solve. The internalization of professional knowledge and
values is a vital characteristic of the professional social worker since he is himself the instrument
of professional social help.
Illustration of restoration would include assistance in obtaining at for a partially deaf child or
helping a rejected lonely child placed in a foster home. The rehabilitation aspect might be
helping the one child to psychologically accept and live with the hearing aid and supporting the
other child as he or she adjusts to the new foster home. Well social work also got some principle
and values which can bring improvement in the human life as per the needy people.
Some principles are
Principle of social justice
Principle of acceptance
Principle of human dignity
Principle of cooperation
Principle of confidentiality
Principle of self- determination
So, this all were the principle of social work and it's got the specific rule and regulation as per the
needy people. Therefore, a professional social work has to understand these dynamic natures of
social work and its importance on planned changed effort.
Objectives of Camp

Reflection of the camp
Our college had planned the fieldtrip to Gotikhel from BASW students for research work. Our
Fieldtrip was held for 1 night 2 days. Being a social work student, we should have knowledge on
research project. Social work is an art, a science, a profession personal, family group and
community relationship through social work practice. The objective of social work is to help
people to enhance their competence and increase problem solving ability. To develop and test
professional knowledge and skills in social work is the goal of social work. The purpose of social
work profession is to promote human and community well-being. And the main aim of our
fieldtrip is to dig out the social problems of that society which is subject based research.
Our journey began from our college at 8: 30 am. Before journey began we had mid-morning
snack at college. After that, we get schedule about our field trip and our journey began. We all
travel through bus and we had so much fun. Altogether we are about 80 students including 2
teachers-our research guide Santosh Gautam and our coordinator Damodar Niraula.
Difficulties faced:
Our journey from college to Gotikhel was so long, it was about 3-4 hours. We all get so much
tired by that long drive but we had so much fun in bus. While travelling in bus, we are able to see
beautiful scenery and some roads are too much dangerous and damaged. We felt so scared that
time when we see road which was small and we felt like we are going to fall but we reached
safely at Gotikhel.
Materials used:
Different kinds of materials were used in Gotikhel to do our research such as papers, markers,
masks, questionnaire, etc. And we used balloons, marbles, spoon, chocolates, etc. in school for
children.
Different Activities Carried Out
Program at Manikhel Lower Secondary School:
After we reached to Gotikhel, our bus stops at Manikhel Lower Secondary school. Manikhel
Lower Secondary school was government school. Then we take some time for refreshment. Due
to long travel through bus everyone seems so tired. Then after we met with everyone in the
schools. Students are giving exams so, we managed to start program. After the completion of
exams, we call all the students in terrace due to lack of rooms we managed program in terrace.
Then we introduced with each other and welcomed to all the teachers of our college and that
school. Then after we explained our program planning. We all students of our college
participated in the program with different activities like providing awareness program about
environment sanitation, personal health care and sanitation, good touch and bad touch, etc. we
also organized game for children like marble and spoon race, balloon game, and quiz. They all
are very excited and they enjoyed game and whole program. After game, we call students one by
one for dance and singing song. They entertained us as well. At last we distributed prize for
those who won in the games. And we gave chocolates to all the students of that school. The
program went very well than we thought and we all are happy for that.
Asking questions to local people of Gotikhel:
After the completion of program, we went to place where we stay. Then we get something to eat
and we ate that. And we all choose our roommates and room to stay. We all put our bags and
stuffs in that room. We take some rest then, we again head to another village area for the
questionnaire and we choose some house to ask some questions. We ask different questions
relates to political issues, social issues, economic issues and cultural issues. We ask same
questions to 4 people.

Research Methods
Survey was conducted and interview has been taken. A structured questionnaire was designed for
research interview. Both open and closed ended questions were included in the research
interview questionnaire. Closed ended questions gave the quantitative information. The open-
ended questions provided in depth information about objectives of the study. Some of the topic
of our questionnaire are as follow:
Political Aspects:
According to the survey done in that area people are not much interested in politics these days
because we can clearly see the condition of politics in our Nepal, talking about politics in the
rural municipality people living in those area do not have any expectations with any kind of
politics and politicians because during the survey few questions were asked related to politics
politicians and government but the answers given by them were a bit odd cause the people of that
area has clearly mentioned that the politicians are here only for the votes ,money and bribes.
Since we all know the politics of Nepal has made a bad impact on citizens of Nepal in 100%
only 20% are actually interested in politics and half of them do not even care about the condition
or the current situation of politics and this is the reason why abroad study, foreign employment
rate has been increasing day by day. According to the survey people has a complain that
government that none of the developmental works are being conducted in a proper way the road
constructions, the construction of bridges isn’t done in a complete manner and the locals think
the government are fully responsible for the developmental work. As we all know the political
conditions of Nepal is very unreliable and unstable at a same time
Economic Aspects of the Gotikhel:
Economic aspects of the Gotikhel is medium, some people earn medium income and some
people earn low income. Most of the people do agriculture in Gotikhel. In Gotikhel, most of the
man and young people went to Kathmandu for work, to earn money and for education. In many
houses, there are only old people, women and children were live. According to my research, their
income is very low and they only do agriculture and some people have shops. In one family,
there are 9-10 members and only 2-4 people are employed. They earn their monthly income
2,000-10,000 according to their work. Due to economic status (Class), some people need to face
discrimination problem.
Geographical Features of the Place:
Gotikhel Village is lies south of Lalitpur District. This village is around 50 km away from
Kathmandu. Gotikhel village is a sleepy settlement. Gotikhel is 4947 feet (Google earth) up from
sea level. This village is very beautiful and land over here is cultivated. This village is also
getting way of Mahabharat range. Total house hold of Gotikhel is 403 and total population is
1,855. Among them Female population are 968 and male population are 887. - CBS 2011.
Nature lover and bird watcher can spend days exploring and discovering some exceptional
species of wild life, tradition and un- touched by modernity. That’s why Gotikhel Village is
known as nature and culture discovery village. This 'off the beaten location' has endless trials
leading to some ethnic tribes thus, offering excellent short hikes and mountain biking on the easy
trials. The sacred and ancient temples and areas such as Bitarni Dham, (people say Bitarni Dham
is reference in Hindus puran and it says that people can easily get rid from sin if they worship
here.) Kaleshwor Mahadev, (In Shree Swasthani Puran, it says that this is a holy place where
lord Shiva's beloved Sati's body part is fallen) Mahankal Temples and some old monasteries (In
Manikhel Vdc near Gotikhel) are located in this region and still needs to be discovered and
unveil its mysterious past. There are a number of excellent short and long hikes from a day to 3-4
days and its surrounding gives you opportunity and time to explore this quaint natural heaven.
On the basis of analysis of present situation, we can draw an inference that Gotikhel is gifted
with all the ingredients which makes it a famous place for tourist attraction. There is enough
scope for expending household participation in village tourism as tourist volume is increasing.
From an environment perspective, village tourism has made the community aware of cleanliness
and good sanitation. Tourism in Gotikhel can changed the economic status and the living
standard of people. Local and scientific knowledge is essential for promoting tourism which
makes the environment, cultural values and beliefs sustainable presence of well knowledgeable
local tour guide could increase the length of tourist stay in the village. To sustain the village
tourism in long run, the opportunity and strength of management should be capitalized. In the
meantime, the management efforts should be extended towards minimizing the weakness and
threats. Finally, it is realized that we need special efforts and attention for the implementation of
a village tourism strategy and its plan.
Socio-Cultural Diversity of the Gotikhel:
Caste is the extreme form of social class in which mobility, up and down the status ladder,
occupations, life changes, individuals rank and positions are ascribed on the basis of birth into
particular caste group or ethnicity also influence the gender roles and status of men and women.

follow their own culture, norms and values. They teach their children to follow their own culture,
norms and values which help to preserve the cultural values to next generation. In that village,
there is no prevalence of Chaupadi System. Religion is one of the important social phenomena

As we visited Gotikhel village, we got to know about their lifestyle, culture, norms, values, their
belief, tradition and many more. We also found out the literacy rate and employment
opportunities of the village. We also tried to find out the participation of village on political
activities. People of Gotikhel are not interested in the voting on upcoming election but they are
forced to vote. However, there is no discrimination among the caste, culture and religion but
according to the research, people are being discriminated on the basis of rich and poor. Most of
the people of Gotikhel are engaged in farming and agriculture due lack of education facilities.
The main problem of people of Gotikhel is unemployment. Many people went to abroad or far
from their home to earn money. That’s why, the main population of that village is female, old
aged people and children while we visit there. Likewise, we got know the about the
communication skills.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, social work helps in social change, development, empowerment and liberation of
people. Our research had broadened our mind. We have explored the different situations and
lifestyle of the people of Gotikhel. It was a small village but every people are facing a lot of
problem about the job opportunity and education. The living style of people of Gotikhel show the
way of doing hard work and their simple life. There should be equal opportunity to all class of
people. I think all people should get equal opportunities in every sector and government should
focuses on those areas which are economically weak. Discrimination between rich and poor
people should be eliminated. Politicians should not work on the favor of rich people only, they
also need to focuses on every people demand as they promised. We learn communication skills
in this visit. We get many lessons in our life by this field visit.
