INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
This paper consists of six questions.

Answer question one in section A plus three others from section B.


Candidates are advised to read the questions carefully, organise their answers and present
them precisely and logically, illustrating with well labelled diagrams whenever necessary.
SECTION A (40Marks)
Qn1. Figure two shows an experiment that was carried out to investigate the effect on the growth of
rats of including milk in the diet.
Two groups (A and B), each consisting of eight young rats, were fed on a synthetic diet consisting of
purified casein (a milk protein ), sucrose, a supplement of 3cm3 of milk per day for the first 18 days
then received no further milk.
Group B was given no milk for the first 18 days, then received a supplement of 3cm3 of milk per day.
The results are shown in the graph below.

a) (ii) Describe the changes in the mean mass up to day 18, for rats which received no milk (group B)
(iii) Compare the changes in mean mass of both groups of rats during the whole experiment.
b) Suggest why the growth of rat was faster when they received to milk than they received no milk.
c) The inorganic salts provided in the diet included calcium. Describe the importance of calcium ions
to the growing rats.
d) Describe how the rats were able to deal with excess protein in their diet.

Qn4. Explain different mechanisms of transport across the cell plasma membrane (20marks)

ii) Describe effect of hormones on the target cells (06marks)

b) Explain effect of arrival of a nerve impulse on a synapse and how curare and organophosphate
affect transmission of nerve impulses (12marks)

Qn6. a) Describe the structural and functional differences between fusiform initials and ray initials
(06marks)

b) Explain how the above named meristematic tissues brings about secondary growth in plants
(14marks)
