Analytical Essay:

“Rays of Relief” is a short story told from the point of view of a teenage
secondary school student who lives in a community in which flooding is a very
prevalent problem. The theme of how solar energy can be used to solve the
problem of flooding was widely evident in this piece by the use of dialectical
variations and commutative behaviours.
In this piece, three distinct dialectical varieties were utilized. The antagonists
use Creole English when speaking. Proof of this is seen in the lines “Dis
floodin' not takin' we by surprise every year. We need somet'ing to keep we
head above water” and "Dis solar panel idea real good, oui.” The dialect also
has a mixture of Basilect and Mesolect characteristics since they were speaking
to their fellow residents and resort to their first language.
Additionally, Standard English was utilized by Mr. Mitchell and the foreign
engineers. In this case, it was illustrated in the line “Solar panels provide
decentralized power generation, enabling communities to become less
dependent on the main power grid.” He is a professional and was addressing the
residents in an official capacity, thus using Standard English.
Furthermore, commutative behaviours were exhibited by both parties. The
antagonists displayed welcoming non-commutative behaviours towards the
protagonist. To clarify, this detail can be seen in detail in the line “The audience
erupted in cheers” and “punctuating his excitement”.
On the other hand, the protagonists displayed an essence of hopelessness and a
slight sense of betrayal in their behaviours. This was demonstrated in the line
“Her impassioned plea resonated with the crowd, and the dialogue ignited a
spark of determination within the community.” This shows her anxiety as well
as her genuine concern about the flooding occurring in her community.
In conclusion, dialectical variations and communicative behaviours assist in
bringing the reflection to life and aid the reader in comprehending the topic of
the IA.
