Teachers are encouraged to start with a baseline assessment in Term 1.
This helps them understand where students need extra help and plan
lessons better. Formal assessments in Mathematics cover all topics, but
the focus is mainly on Numbers, Operations, and Relationships, which
make up 60% of the assessment. It’s important to remember that
assessments don’t just happen in one test, but over time through different
activities that check various skills.
Mathematics in the Foundation Phase covers Five content areas
Assessment is An ongoing, planned process of recognising,
collecting and clarifying information.
A formal task does not necessarily mean One formal test
Learners are encouraged to use Concrete objects and manipulatives
during formal and informal assessment.
Baseline assessment is conducted in The first term
Formative Assessment
These are assessments done during the learning process (e.g., quizzes,
observations, class activities). They are informal and help teachers adjust
their teaching in real-time. They give immediate feedback to students.
Summative Assessment
These are assessments done at the end of a lesson, unit, or term (e.g.,
tests, projects). They measure what a student has learned over a longer
period and are used to assign grades.
Assessment is not just about testing; it’s about understanding each child’s
learning process. It guides teachers in making decisions that support and
challenge their students. By using assessment, teachers can personalize
lessons, track progress, give feedback, and create a supportive learning
environment that helps every child succeed in the Foundation Phase.
