What is Church Music?

INTRODUCTION
Biblical church music encompasses music used within Christian Worship
services, including psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, as well as other
forms that express faith and praise.
It is intended to instruct, edify, and facilitate corporate worship of God.

Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for

that is debauchery, but be filled with the
Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making
melody to the Lord with your heart,

Colossians 3:16 says: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly
in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in
psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in
your hearts to the Lord.".

Paul commands gathered believers to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual

songs, thereby “singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart”
(Eph. 5:19) and “teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom”
(Col. 3:16).
Purpose: The purpose of church music is to point people towards Jesus
and His Gospel, and to build them up in their faith.
PSALMS
These are songs derived from the biblical book of Psalms, often used in
both Jewsish synagogues and early Christian worship.

HYMNS
Hymns are typically songs with a verse/chorus structure that express
praise, adoration, or other aspects of Christian faith.
SPIRITUAL SONGS
This category encompasses a broader range of songs that teach and
admonish one another in spiritual truths, potentially including both
those focused on the Godhead and those that teach Christian doctrine.
Christian music is an expression of our faith in the One God Three
Persons (1G3P) and is an outlet to praise and bring glory to the
Father. Christian music also is written to encourage our fellow
brothers and sisters in their walks with the Lord. What makes a
song Christian is simply the lyrics. The content of what is sung
must be congruent with the principals of God and His Holy Word.

Music that forms an integral part of organized Christian worship.

Over the centuries, this has mainly taken the form of music
performed by choirs, but it is not unusual to find it being provided
nowadays by folk musicians or even rock groups.

- Genre of music composed for performance as part of

religious ceremonies
- written for performance in church, or any musical setting of
ecclesiastical liturgy, or music set to words expressing
propositions of a sacred nature, such as a hymn.

- Music is a very powerful instrument.

o It can stir different generations.
o It is a language of the soul. Music brings the emotions
into reality what you’re expressing or feeling. Music is
very seductive. It can do something to your artistic
mind.
- So, don’t make it a god but make it a means to point people
to God. The substance of what you sing about must always be
pointing people to the Truth. Music will keep changing and it’s ok
but let us not forget the old ones.
 Music is a carrier of memories. Illustration: I Will Run
(Freddie Rodriquez). Therefore, let us connect the past to
now by not forgetting the past (old songs sung by old people).
Example: Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, Old Rugged
Cross, etc… Connect those people in the future.
