Percentage

Percentage

A percentage is a number or ratio that can be expressed as a fraction of 100.

Hence, the percentage means, a part per hundred. The word per cent means per
100. It is represented by the symbol “%”.

Percentage Formula

To determine the percentage, we have to divide the value by the total value and
then multiply the resultant by 100.

Percentage formula = (Value/Total value) × 100

Example: (4/5) × 100 = 0.8 × 100 = 80%

Q.) Ram scored 30 marks out of 50 marks then its score in terms of percentage is:

Solution:

As per given,

Total marks = 50 and marks obtained = 30

∴ Percentage marks = (30/50) × 100 = 60%

How to calculate the percentage of a number?

To calculate the percentage of a number, we need to use a different formula such

as:

P% of Number = X, where X is the required percentage.

If we remove the % sign, then we need to express the above formulas as;

(P/100) × Number = X

Q.) Calculate 25% of 120.

Solution:

Let 25% of 120 = X

⟹ (25/100) × 120 = X

⟹ X = 30

∴ 25% of 120 = 30

Percentage Difference Formula

If we are given with two values X1 and X2 and we need to find the percentage
difference between these two values, then it can be done using the formula:

|X1 −X2 |
Percentage Difference = X +X × 100
[ 1 2]
2
Q.) If 10 and 40 are two different values, then the percentage difference between
them will be:

Solution:

|10−40|
% difference between 10 and 40 = 10+40 × 100 = 120 %
[ ]
2

Successive Percentage Change

Formula to find successive Percentage Change: x + y + (x × y)/100, where x and y

are percentage values.

Q.) A number is increased by 15% and then it is decreased by 10%. The net
increase or decrease is:

Solution:

As per given, x = 15% increment and y = 10% decrement

Here, we use +ve sign for increment and –ve sign for decrement

x×y
∴ Net increase or decrease = x + y +
100

15 ×(−10)
= 15 + (−10) + = 5 − 1.5 = 3.5 %
100

∴ Net increment = 3.5%

Percentage Increase and Decrease

 The percentage increase is equal to the subtraction of the original number

from a new number, divided by the original number and multiplied by 100.
 % increase = [Increase in number/Original number] x 100

Where, Increase in number = New number – Original number

 Similarly, a percentage decrease is equal to the subtraction of a new number

from the original number, divided by the original number and multiplied by
100.
 % decrease = [Decrease in number /Original number] x 100

Where Decrease in number = Original number – New number

So basically if the answer is negative then there is a percentage decrease.

Q.) Increase 200 by 10% and decrease the same by 15%. Find the new number in
each case.

Solution:

Case 1) Increase 200 by 10%

We know that,

% increase = [Increase in number/Original number] × 100

Where, Increase in number = New number – Original number

New number – Original number
∴ 10 = × 100
Original number

New number – 200

∴ 10 = × 100
200

⟹ New number = 220

Case 2) Decrease 200 by 15%

We know that,

% decrease = [Decrease in number /Original number] × 100

Where Decrease in number = Original number – New number

Original number – New number

∴ 15 = × 100
Original number

200 – New number

∴ 15 = × 100
200

⟹ New number = 170

Q.) Let a bag contain 1 kg of Oranges and 4 kg of Mangoes. Find the percentage of
Mangoes in the bag.

Solution:

By given,

Total quantity = 5 kg

Quantity of Mangoes = 4 kg
∴ Percentage of Mangoes = (4/5) × 100 = 80%

We can express percentage in many ways

 Express percentage as fraction

x
“x%” can be expressed as fraction which =
100

20 1
Example, 20% = =
100 5

 Express percentage as decimal

We know, 4% = 4/100

To get it decimal form we have to divide 4 by 100,

⟹ 4% = 4/100 = 0.04

 Convert fraction into percentage

a
Let be a fraction, to convert it into percentage we multiply it by 100.
b

a
Gives, ( × 100) %
b

2
Example, Percentage value of will be
5

2
⟹ ( × 100) % = 40%
5
 Convert decimal into percentage

In order to convert a decimal number into percentage, we multiply the decimal

number with 100.

⟹ 1.5 can be in percentage as, 1.5 × 100 = 150%

Q.31) A person spends 71.43% of his income. If his income increases by 28.57%
and expenditure increases by 60% but savings decreases by Rupees 1200 then
find his initial income.

A. Rs. 8200

B. Rs. 8400

C. Rs. 8250

D. Rs. 8300

Answer: Option B

Explanation:
We know that, income – expenditure = savings.

Here, 71.43% = 5/7

⟹ Initial income = 7 then expenditure = 5 and savings = 2.

Now, income increases by 28.57% = 2/7 and expenditure increases by 60% = 3/5

⟹ Final income = 7 + 2 = 9, new expenditure = 5 + 3 = 8 and savings = 1.

Difference between savings = 2-1 = 1 unit

By given, 1 unit = Rs. 1200

So, initial income is 7 units = Rs. (7×1200) = Rs. 8400

Q.32) If 130 is increased by x% and 390 is decreased by x%, results are equal, then

A. 8.47%

B. 8.12%

C. 8.84%

D. 8.33%

Answer: Option D

Explanation:

According to the question,

A×229% = 2748%× B

⟹ A = 12B

Now,
B = O.0833A

So, x% = 8.33%

Q.34) 20 liters of water is added to 60 liters of a solution containing 40% alcohol

in water. What is the concentration of alcohol in solution now?

A. 25%

B. 35%

C. 30%

D. 32%

Answer: Option C

Explanation:

As per given,

Initial quantity of water = 60×60/100 = 36 liters

Initial quantity of alcohol = 60 – 36 = 24 liters

New quantity of water = 36 + 20 = 56 liters

So, Mixture = 24 + 56 = 80 liters

According to the question,

∴ Concentration of alcohol in solution now = (24/80) × 100 = 30%

Q.35) If the salary of Sonu is 62.5% less than the Monu, then salary of Monu is

So, difference in salary = 5 units

∴ Required % = (5/3)×100 = 166.67 %

Q.36) The price of petrol is increased by 57.14%. By how much % a car driver
should reduce his consumption of petrol so that there is no extra expenditure?

A. 42.86%

B. 63.64%

C. 36.36%
D. 46.24%

Answer: Option C

Explanation:

We know, expenditure = price × consumption

As, 57.14% = 4/7

Suppose initial price = 7 units then final price = 11 units.

When expenditure is constant then price and consumption are inversely

proportional to each other.

So, initial consumption = 11 units and final consumption = 7 units.

So, reduced consumption = 4 units.

∴ Required % = (4/11)×100 = 36.36%

Q.37) The price of sugar is reduced by 20%. Now, a person can buys 7 kg more
sugar for Rs. 340. What is the new price of sugar per Kg?

A. Rs. 9.71

B. Rs. 12.14

C. Rs. 11.24

D. Rs. 10.45

Answer: Option A
Explanation:

We know, expenditure = price × consumption

As, 20% = 1/5

Suppose initial price = 5 units then final price = 4 units.

When expenditure is constant then price and consumption are inversely

proportional to each other.

So, initial consumption = 4 units and final consumption = 5 units.

So, increased consumption = 1 unit.

By given, 1 unit = 7 kg

⟹ 5 units = 35 kg

∴ New price of sugar per Kg = Rs. (340/35) = Rs. 9.71

Q.38) The population of a city decreases by (100/17)%, (100/13)% and (100/23)%

respectively in three years. If the population of the city decreases by 7360 during
2nd year then find the total decrement in population for three years.

A. 16230

B. 18230

C. 16450

D. 17180
Answer: Option D

Given: The population of a city decreases by (100/17)%, (100/13)% and (100/23)%

respectively in three years.

And the population of the city decreases by 7360 during 2nd year.

For 2nd year,

Decrement of (100/13)% = 1/13

⟹ At the beginning of 2nd year population = 13 units and at the end of 2nd year
population = 12 units.

Also, 1 unit = 7360 ⟹ 13 units = 95680 and 12 units = 88320

For 1st year,

Decrement of (100/17)% = 1/17

⟹ At the beginning of 1st year population = 17 units and at the end of 1st year
population = 16 units.

Also, 16 units = 95680 ⟹ 17 units = 101660

∴ Initial population = 101660

For 3rd year,

Decrement of (100/23)% = 1/23

⟹ At the beginning of 3rd year population = 23 units and at the end of 3rd year
population = 22 units.

Also, 23 units = 88320 ⟹ 22 units = 84480

So, population after 3rd year = 84480

∴ Total decrement in population for three years = 101660 – 84480 = 17180
