Chapter 1: From Trade to Territory (Establishing Colonialism in India)
General Objectives:
- Students will understand how European trading companies established colonial rule in
India.
- Students will explore the strategies used by the British to expand their territory.
- Students will develop awareness of the political and economic changes during colonial
expansion.
Specific Objectives:
- Students will describe the role of the East India Company.
- Students will explain the methods used by the British to gain control over Indian
kingdoms.
- Students will analyze the impact of colonial rule on Indian society.
Day-wise Breakdown:
Day 1: Introduction
Introductory Questions:
- What do you know about the British in India?
- Why would a trading company need an army?
Activity:
Students will watch a documentary clip on the arrival of the East India Company.
