MEDIEVAL PERIOD
The period of European history extending
from about 500 to 1400-1500ce is
traditionally known as the “middle ages”.The
term was first used by 15th –century scholars
to designate the period between their own
time and the fall of the Western Roman
Empire.
They also called it “Dark Age”.
They also called it “Birth of Idea”
COMPOSER OF MEDIEVAL PERIOD:
1.Hildegard von Bingen(Germany,c.1098-1179 CE)
One of the most famous composers of the Medieval
Period is Hildegard von Bingen (c. 1098-1179 CE). Born
to a noble family in Germany, Hildegard von Bingen
experienced religious visions as a child which were
later recorded in a book called Scivias. She later
became the prioress of the Benedictine cloister of
Disibodenberg where she had been educated as a
child, ultimately leaving to form her own convent.
While there, Hildegard continued recording her
visions, but also wrote poetry, each text set to her
own original composition of music. These pieces are
compiled in a work known as Symphonia armonie
celestium revelationum.
One of Hildegard's most well-known and most frequently
performed compositions is Ordo Virtutum. Composed in
1151 CE, Ordo Virtutum is considered the oldest morality
play and describes the conflict over a woman's soul
between 17 virtues and the devil. Although Hildegard had
no formal musical training, she still incorporated common
musical structures of the day, including using plainchant
for all the voices in Ordo Virtutum except for the part of
the devil. Hildegard's music also featured elements that
make it unique when compared to other composers of the
period. For example, her melodies are known for using a
wider vocal range and more freeform melodies than other
composers of her time. Hildgard's works were rediscovered
and popularized in modern times, and she is celebrated as
one of the earliest known composers.
5. Leonin (c. 1159-1200)
The French composer Leonin was
active in the Middle Ages (1150-
1300) and was a pioneer of the
polyphonic organ. Organum - when
an ordinary human’s basic melody is
usually accompanied by additional
voices at regular intervals - evolved
in the 9th century, an early form of
counterpoint (relationships between
simultaneous and interdependent
musical lines) and harmony as
created the beginning of We know it
today.
